I've got to be quite a fan of catchup TV on I or ITV player.

Thing is though - although everything else is fine with my lap-top, sound sometimes does not come out of my lap-tops speakers.

Then just as mysteriously it comes back again.

Lap top is a reasonably new - well about a year old Samsung i5 running Windows 8 (no I haven't updated to 8.1)

I've checked volume control and in control panel to see if the speakers are working - you know where you press a little button and a graphic of each speaker plays a little tune - but when I go back to play iplayer or a youtube video - - - the screens plays but no sound.

Next time I open up the lap-top the sound is back - next time it's gone - no pattern to it - - do you chaps think I've got a hardware problem or is there something else I could try ?

Hi, sorry for the pun, but this sounds more like an internet connection problem. Have you any sound, music or whatever saved to your computer, or a disk drive that you can play a CD, if so is there any problem with sound then?

Also, why haven't you upgraded to 8.1?

Doing the upgrade might help.

And ... is it out of warranty yet ... it may be worth registering the complaint with them even it turns out to be something simple.

It happens with DVD's as well so guess that's local sound - sometimes they've sound sometimes not.

Haven't gone for 8.1 as when looked at it didn't think it offered sufficient improvement over 8 - not worth the hassle - at the time another esteemed member of this parish thought so too - so was good enough for me.

My Sammy laptop is out of guarantee.

Any other idea's is it worth running Sammy's "Recovery" programme because it seems to have happened following a Windows then a Samsung update ?

First of all I would recommend installing 8.1, although on the surface it may not seem much, it is the major improvements to stability and security which are basically under the bonnet sort of thing.

After that, see how it goes, if however you still find problems, there are two alternatives to check if it is either hardware or software which is to try external speakers plugged in firstly to the sound out 3mm port, and the second is to try some USB speakers that plug into a USB port. That will at least rule in or out faulty laptop speakers.

Have been using earphones to listen to favourite prog's - so don't upset the Managing Director when she's reading.

Headphones now also work intermittently so looks like what ever it is - is affecting the audio out function as well - is it likely the software updates Windows and Samsung have affected this change in behavior.

I'm still reticent to update to W8.1 because everything has been going swimmingly until quite recently and everything except sound is still ok - if the update was - "right ho just press this button and you'll be updated" - no changes to prog's I've already got on the lappy, not having to go through the tedious op of re-installing everything/anything, no apps changes, all my files stay in the same place etc and Mocrosoft guaranteed it would all stay exactly the same as it is now - then maybe I'd consider it.

I very much doubt that it is software related as far as updates, if it was, the sound would be off completely I think.

I am actually suspecting a hardware fault. When the sound goes off, have you tried a gentle tap of the case, or moving the headphone jack in and out?

If that brings the sound back it is a poor connection inside.

Being a laptop, it is not recommended to take it apart to look unless very familiar with how to dismantle it, there may be a maintenance manual available on line to show that. However if not sure, it may be best to take it either back to where you bought it, or a reputable technician.

If knocking it, or other movements do nothing, we can try upgrading or replacing the sound system drivers.

Also on looking back, you mentioned the test symbols in the sound management window, do they actually produce sounds even though video's or other music doesn't? A yes or no to that could be important.

Well there's a thing it seems to be OK now - - well for the last few tries anyway - you never know tomorrows another day !

Found a software update on the Samsung system SW Update called "No Sound Patch" with the attached legend "this patch fixes the no sound issue after Windows hotfix installing".

Also a speaker icon for Realtek Audio Manager has appeared in the toolbar.

Can't be sure that's it as it's flattered to deceive before will report back in a few days if all goes well (or not)

Thanks for the help.

Hi, it looks like Samsung have sent out a patch for a known issue then, see how it goes and hope all is OK.
