decemberboy Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Hi, I have a Packard Bell EasyNote TE laptop running Windows 8.1 which in the last month or so has become increasingly unstable. Not connecting to the internet, slow connection when I do, laptop freezing for several minutes at a time and sometimes crashing altogether. I've run virus checks, malware scans etc both in normal and safe mode and every time nothing is found. I've refreshed Windows back to factory settings in the hope that would help but it hasn't made any difference. I've also had problems when trying to boot with the laptop saying that it couldn't boot as there is no drive (not word for word but something like that) although after trying a couple of times Windows did load normally. I've had the blue screen a couple of time although the laptop has restarted before I could make of a note of the error code. Today however I got the blue screen and managed to get the error which was: KERNEL_ DATA_INPAGE_ERROR (volmgrx.sys) A quick Google search throws up several results but I'm not too sure what to do to fix it so if anyone could help me here and/or take me through what needs to be done I'd greatly appreciate it. I've used this forum before and it's always been very helpful so thanks in advance! Quote
KenB Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Hi KERNEL_ DATA_INPAGE_ERROR (volmgrx.sys) couldn't boot as there is no drive This could be linked to a failing hard drive / bad sectors and the fact that you say the system is unstable bears this out - enough to check out the hard drive anyway :) Please do the following: Open the Search option ( top right corner of screen ) and type in ....command prompt .... Then right click on the Command Prompt box that appears underneath and click on "Run as Administrator" At the command prompt type ........ chkdsk /r .......ENTER [ there is a space before /r ] This will run a check on the hard disk and attempt to repair any errors it finds in the sectors and readable data. =============== Then download Seatools for Windows from here click here Run this on the drive. Any fails and the drive is faulty. There is a User Guide bottom right of the same download page. decemberboy Posted August 11, 2014 Author Posted August 11, 2014 Thanks a lot for the reply. I ran Check Disk, it took a couple of hours but got to 100% and reloaded Windows no problem so I assume it's done its job. I've installed Seatools and it's currently performing a long generic scan in my C drive. Was this the correct option to select? thanks again. Quote
decemberboy Posted August 11, 2014 Author Posted August 11, 2014 The Seatools long generic scan passed. Is there any other tests or scans I need to run? Quote
KenB Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 Hi At least you now know that your hard disk is in good condition :) and reloaded Windows no problem After running chkdsk .........is the system any better ? If not - try taking one of the RAM modules out and run on the other ( assuming 2 modules ) The RAM will be located under a panel in the base of the machine. ( The system will run a little slower ....but not much ) If no better swap the RAM modules over and try running on the other one.
