Hi,

I recently bought a reconditioned pc with open office installed on it. Apart from having to tweak all my previous microsoft documents its been ok up until today. Every time i saved a document it asked if i wanted to keep current format or save as ODF format. Up until now i saved and clicked "keep current format" but it wouldnt save correctly, so i clicked "save as ODF" and unticked the box at the bottom of the window. Since then the entire program will not open. Even the documents i had saved on an external hard drive will not open.

Please help.... im desperate.

Appologies if this has been covered before but couldnt find anything.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Hi Matt, this strikes me as a possibly corrupted original installation of Open Office.

Try uninstalling it and then a reinstall, being open source software it is free.

Download the latest version from here, is safest.

https://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html

Please make sure that any unwanted additions are not ticked, if offered an advanced installation, choose it as that will be where unwanted bundled junk ware is found to be, so make sure ticks are removed.

I haven't downloaded and installed it recently so not sure if bundled junk such as the Ask toolbar etc are included or not these days.

If you find any difficulty in uninstalling the original, please let us know before installing the new version.

Hi, it looks like it is starting at start up.

The best way forward now will be to install Revo uninstaller, that will force the uninstall and removal for you.

download Revo from here :-

http://www.revouninstaller.com/download-freeware-version.php

That link starts the download straight away, once downloaded install it and then open it. it will give a list of all programs installed, just look for the Open Office and either double click on it or choose uninstall. It then asks which mode, choose the moderate option. In your case it may ask if you wish to force an uninstall, allow it do so.

You can keep Revo on your computer and use it for any uninstall later, it is much better than the Windows own uninstall system.

ok so revo has now found leftover registry items and made them bold. It wants me to verify the bolded items and tick each one to be deleted... do I tick them all ??? This wont cause me to lose documents.. will it ???

No you won't lose any documents Matt, Your documents are in their own folder and though maybe opened by Open Office, they are a separate thing.

Just tick each as it says, then carry on till it tells you it has finished. Once it has done so, it may be best to shut down and reboot the computer before starting to reinstall Open Office. The restart just helps to make sure everything of the old version has been removed.

Great stuff Matt and glad to hear all worked out OK and Revo got the uninstall done for you. Wonderful program remover and as I said earlier it does dig down and removes stuff left behind by Windows own uninstaller.

I will mark this as solved.

This site advised me to download Revo Uninstaller and I'm so grateful for it. I use the free version but the full version is available as a free trial. Both take significantly longer than the Windows uninstaller but they do get the job done properly.

If a window pops up from the program's own uninstaller, I get rid of that and let Revo do its job.
