Plastic Nev Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Hi George, if there is a CD in the drive, it needs to come out, as the BIOS just might be trying to boot off it and if an ordinary CD it can't. However are you sure it is the CD you can hear spinning up and not the hard drive, as that should also make the whirring spin up sound too. Please check the CD drive to be sure. If still nothing, double check the connections to the keyboard and also check no other connections under the keyboard haven't been loosened or come off. Nev. Ray1000 Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 George, To eliminate the remote possibility of it being the CD ... there is probably only one screw on the underside holding the CD/DVDRW unit in place ... remove the screw and slide the unit out and try again. And ... Does the windows music play to signify Windows has started even though you can't see anything? Ray Quote
Plastic Nev Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Edit, just seen Ray posted while I was writing, he does have a good point about the usual windows theme music, do you hear that? OK George, It may well be booting up correctly but with no screen you can't tell of course. My thought now is that you may have disturbed the wiring for either the screen backlight or the screen itself. Does there seem to be anything showing if you look at the screen from an angle and with lights either off or dimmed down a bit in the room? If you can see a vague outline of the normal desktop screen it will be a lack of backlight, so it could be the inverter or the tube itself. Some laptops have the inverter circuit within the lid under the screen, others it is in the main body under the screen. You might have to take the lid and screen out to check wiring there, you never know if working on the keyboard has dislodged a connection. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? KenB Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Hi George, The CDROM Drive needs to be taken out of the equation. If it is spinning then presumably you have tried to open it and cannot ? Ray suggested removing the drive itself. This is easy to do and is usually achieved by removing one or two screws in the base of the machine. If you are happy to try this it would, at least, eliminate the drive - especially as it is constantly spinning. Another option is to try to access the BIOS and change the Boot Order to look at the Hard Drive first. Some laptops have very limited BIOS options - some give us more to work with. To access the BIOS: ( assuming that you can see something on screen at this stage ) Switch on and constantly tap DEL / F2 alternately ( these or the usual keys that work ) Do this about once per second until you see a BIOS screen. Move around with the arrow keys. You are looking for Boot Sequence / Boot Options / Boot Order or similar. Once there check the the Hard Drive is first in the list of options. It will say on screen how to move it up if it isn't first. If you moved it then Save and Exit [ usually F10 ....again it will say on screen ] Try booting up now. Ive just had the keyboard section off the laptop as the mouse wasnt working when the screen just went blank now it wont power up This looks as if a connection has been disturbed. you don't always get Windows Chimes .....mine doesn't play it.
