Apparently I need to download a driver as the one in my PC is not working properly. Don't know why as I only just bought this PC (refurbished) a week ago. It does play sound but not on everything. Sorry but I am not computer literate so my terminology will be rather primitive.

I need to get a driver for Microsoft Teredo Tunniling Adapter !? When clicking on properties, I got a message saying 'This device cannot start (Code 10). Don't know what to do of course. Driver details are C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\tunnel.sys

None of this makes any sense to me. What do I need to do please?

Tried Microsoft website for downloading a driver but I don't know the product name !?!

Please help.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi, first thing, can you tell us the make and model number of the computer please. That will help me look up what the sound system is that is installed.

Next is to click the start orb, and then type "Device Manager" into the search bar, then click on Device manager in the list that opens up.

In the device manager window, are there any yellow or even red warnings and if so what are they for, if you can post a screen shot of it it may help.

Hi Nev, Thank you for replying and so quickly too.

My PC is a Dell Optiplex GX620. Processor is Intel ® Pentium ® D CPU 3.00GHz 2.99GHz. RAM - 4.00GB. 32-bit Operating System. Running Windows 7 Home Premium.

Opened Device Manager but all looks OK. No yellow or red markings anywhere. Clicked on the Sound, video and game contollers (arrow) and below it says SoundMAX Intergrated Digital Audio.

Does any of that help?

Many thanks for further info. if possible.

OK, thanks for that information and from the fact you see no warning signs in device manager, can you explain in more detail please which sound you can hear, and which sound you don't if you think there should be sound.

I mean such things as sound with video from for example Youtube, or with music you have stored on the computer or maybe websites.

Hi Nev,

Thanks for the reply. Well, if I'm totally honest with you, I don't really know what it can and cannot play. So far, I have been on Youtube with no trouble at all. Other sounds are available, i.e. Windows start up and shut down. My niggly problem is my diary. There are sounds which it makes normally but there are missing. I know it's a bit futile but there might be other areas which I have yet to discover that don't work. Also an exclamation mark (black with yellow triangle background) appears on the icon for my PC in the Devices and Printers window of the control panel. I did a 'right click' on the icon. When I choose 'troubleshoot' it comes up with a problem with the driver but the 'Apply this fix' command doesn't solve it. I get a 'Microsoft Teredo Tunneling Adapter has a driver problem' and then it says 'Not fixed' followed by a red circle with a white cross in it. And that is basically it!! Nothing else recommend which leaves me puzzled.

Hi, can you show me a picture of that devices and printers window so I have a better idea of what it may be please.

If not sure how to obtain and then post a picture, here is how.

Firstly, look in all programs, Accessories, and find "Snipping tool" when that is opened, use the mouse pointer and hold down the left mouse button to select around the image of the screen you want, (A red lined rectangle or square will be created) and then release the mouse button. A picture then appears showing what you selected. Might need some practice to get it right if never having selected a part of a picture before.

Click on "File" at the top left and then "save as" to somewhere you can remember, also give it a name you can remember, though the default "Capture JPG" might be good enough for just a one off..

Next is to click the "Reply to thread button on the forum, then click the "Go advanced" button under the normal reply box, this opens a bigger reply page.

Write whatever you need to in the reply box, then scroll down to Attachments, and click on the "Manage attachments" button. A new smaller window opens and at the top on the right is a button marked "Add files" click that, then the "select files" in the even smaller box. That opens your computers Windows explorer, and navigate to the picture you created earlier, click on it, and then click "Open", it returns to the smaller box, then click the "upload files button"

You should now see the name of the picture underneath the original "Manage attachments" button. You can now click the "Done" button bottom right of the smaller attachments window. Then finally if all is as you want it, click the "Submit Reply" Button, or first to double check all is OK before then, click the "Preview Post" button

You will see below this post, the brass instrument from my avatar as proof that it works just as I described it.

Sound problem

Hi Nev,

Managed to use the snipping tool that you mentioned. I didn't know about it before. Good tool.

I have attached them to let you see what's going on. Hope you can understand what you see. The one thing that is weird is , in the Devices and Printers window, I double clicked on the computer (Dell-PC) icon and up came the printer scanner device which I thought was rather odd. It is on the capture 4 photo. Gremlins at work here !? :behindsofa:

Hope I have attached the photos as haven't done it before this way. :confused2:

Many thanks again for any help.:help:

This is rather odd, it doesn't actually have anything to do with sound, or at least not directly.

I have found there is quite a lot about this problem with the teredo tunnelling adapter and all the fixes I find are registry jobs which I am reluctant to offer, as the wrong thing done in there can cause more problems than fix any.

I hope Ken may have a suggestion here so I will ask him to have a look, though it may well need that registry fix any way.

Hi Lintama,

"Toredo Tunneling Device" is not related to your Sound.

It is connected with the Internet Network.

Nev is correct when he says that the "fix" may be linked to a Registry correction.

There is a relatively simple way to find out.

This will require you to navigate through the Registry ( easy enough if you follow directions carefully ) and make one change.

We always warn our members that the Registry is a sensitive area to be working in and errors can result in much bigger problems.

If you are happy to go on with this then let us know and either Nev or I will guide you through the next stage.

I must repeat that even if you correct the "Toredo Tunneling Device" error I doubt that this will solve the sound problem.

Sound problem

Hi KenB,

Funny you should say the problem could be with my internet. I have, since I have had this newly refurbished computer of seven days, a problem with connecting to the internet, although not a big problem at all. When I switch on my PC and after it has gone through the usual 'starting up procedure' that I then cannot connect to the internet without me clicking on the icon on the bottom right of the screen. It's a kind of triangular icon. It then opens a small window with different connections. I choose the one that is correct and it then says 'connected' and then I am on the internet. Haven't come across that before on other PCs. Just a bit of a nuisance really but no big deal.

Thanks for pointing out what could be the problem. I would like to go ahead with fixing the registry if you could talk me through it. My question is, why did it happen in the first place? Could some spyware cause this?

I have attached another photo for you to look at.

Many thanks again for the help.

Hi Lintama

Just to be on the safe side - let's backup the Registry first.

take a look here - click here

When you save the backup ...save it to the desktop as "Registry Copy" or something similar.

Once you have the backup on your Desktop ...

Start > type in .....regedit .....ENTER

This gives you access to the Registry.

Click the > next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ..............you will get a list appear. Scroll down and find SYSTEM .....click the > next to this.

Continue in this manner through the following ..

CURRENT CONTROL SET > SERVICES > TCPIP6 > ( clicking the > next to each one )

Finally click on the word PARAMETERS to highlight it ( not the > )

After you click on "PARAMETERS" take a look at the right side of the screen.

You should see "Disabled Components" At the end of the line of text it will have a number in brackets........... 0x000000ff(255)

If this is any number other than 0 we need to change it. If it is 0 or Disabled Components is not showing you can stop here.

Click on Disabled Components to highlight it. A box will appear.

Click on "Modify"

The "Edit DWord" box will appear.

If it is not selected ......click on "Decimal" ( the other option is Hexadecimal )

A number will show under Value Data (This will be the number shown in brackets from earlier)We need to set this to 0 then click OK

Reboot your computer.

Now check in Device Manager again and see if the Toredo Tunneling Device problem has been fixed.

Please DO NOT make any other changes in the Registry.

There is a video here that may help - it does bounce around a bit but if you watch it first then follow my instructions you should be OK.

I've taken a snapshot of the section you mentioned from my backup copy. Don't exactly know what I'm looking at but does this look OK to you? I haven't actually gone into the reg.file yet as maybe I won't need to if the attached looks OK.

Really grateful for your help but how on Earth do you know about all this stuff? :hail:

Hi

how on Earth do you know about all this stuff?

Years of reading / researching trying to answer members' questions :)

It looks from your image that the "Disabled Components" is showing in Hexadecimal.

I think this is the default anyway.

0000008a = 138

The easiest way to check is to take a look in the Registry.

If you are unsure about anything - just ask.

As long as you don't change / delete anything you can look around no problem.

If any help, my system being OK with no problems and following the path as described, I find there is no "Disabled components" showing. That suggests that if you follow the instructions, it should then become the same as mine.

As Ken said, no harm in having a look and also posting further screen shots, especially of what shows up if following the path by clicking on the "Disabled Components" (I think that should be a right click, try it if an ordinary left click does nothing) If you don't change anything in there yet all will be OK.

Nev is correct.

I have altered my original text ....... you need to click on "PARAMETERS" itself - not the > to the left of it.

( sorry for the confusion )

I too have checked and I do not have "Disabled Components" at this point.

It looks as if you do - so run through the instructions above and check.

Make the changes if necessary.

Click OK and re-boot.

Ask as many questions as you need to :)

Hi KenB,

Thank you for your help. Nev too. Such a complicated business this technology stuff (well it is to me). Sound is OK although still has that same minor problem but all other sounds seems fine.

I will be back, no doubt, with more questions in due course.

Tried to donate some dosh to you but Paypal didn't want to accept it. Will try again later.

Hi

Did you follow the Registry fix - and did it solve the "Toredo Tunneling Device" problem ?

Yes, I did change the number on the DisabledComponents"=dword:0000008e to dword:0

but then I changed it back again when there was no difference to the sounds.

Posted

Ah, it does still need to be set at "0" in the registry, that at least will enable internet connection, as we said at first, it isn't connected to the sound system, but it is needed to be working for internet.

The sound problem itself and is the only thing you can find wrong are sounds your diary should make. Am I correct or is there other sounds missing?

Which diary is it? Is it software you installed or some other diary that is part of Windows?

I did suggest that the Registry "fix" would not solve your sound problem.

The fix was for the Toredo Tunneling problem.

I assume that as you have altered the setting back to what it was you still have the Toredo Tunneling error message ?

I looked in the devices and printers section and the PC icon no longer has the black exclamation mark in the yellow triangle. I presume tha Toredo thingy is fixed.

The diary is part of the Lotus SmartSuite 97 which is old but works on Windows 7. The sounds are not in the least important but I just got used to them.

Thank you Nev for your help. Don't know how you guys get to know so much.

Posted

Hi, Although I don't know of that Lotus Smartsuite software, I suspect it is set up to use the Windows sound font. There are quite a lot of different sounds which were on XP that are not there or at least slightly different in Windows 7. So some sounds may never be recovered or usable.

Lets take a look at what is there that may be able to be either modified or used.

Typical of Windows there are at least two ways to get to the same point, you can either right click on the white speaker icon on the bottom task bar and then select "Sound"

Or open the control panel and again select "Sound" in the window that then opens, make sure the "Sounds" tab is selected.

There is a tremendously long list starting with Windows, Asterisk, Close program, Critical battery alarm, and so on.

If you scroll down the list there are many different sounds associated with many aspects of Windows, and other programs. There are useful but basic instructions in that window as to how to set up a custom set of sounds and how to add or remove them, so have a look and see if there are entries for your program, but will possibly be without a speaker icon next to them. For sounds that are there you can click on the entry and then the "Test" button to hear it.

If you create a custom set of sounds, you can make and add your own and make sure the sound you create is in the WAV format so that you can insert it.

You can have a lot of fun with other sounds too, I created one for my E Mail notifier, which does startle folks visiting when it goes off.
