Chancer Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 Ok guys, I hope someone can help me on here. Around five days ago I stopped using my desktop as normal, turned it off and went to sleep. I turn everything off by the main plug and that includes my router which is in my bedroom. I booted up my PC as normal the next day and I noticed the bottom right connection icon never had the 'globe' on it which usually means my connection is fine. I have tried restarting my computer numerous times, resetting my router numerous times as well and nothing is working. When I try and diagnose and repair the connection it just asks me to 'Automatically get new IP settings' and when that doesnt work it suggests resetting 'Local Area Connection', which again doesnt do anything. Its not any of my ethernet cables as I have tested them into my laptop and xbox, both of which connect fine. I have around five devices connected to my router at one time, 2 xboxs, 1 laptop/desktop and 1 mobile phone. I live in England and my ISP is BT and i'm using there fifth generation BT HOME HUB. The ethernet port on the back of the desktop is working as when I plug my ethernet into it it lights up green meaning its picking it up. I also bought a USB ethernet adapter to see if it works that way and again, its not even connecting to the internet with that being used. I have no idea whats going on and any help would be appreciated. I'm on Windows Visa Ultimate Thanks alot. Quote

KenB Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 Hi Chancer and welcome to ExTS You mention Ethernet Connection ...but not wireless. Do you have a wireless adapter for this machine and have you tried it ? ======== Start > type in the Search Box ....network ....click on the Network and Sharing Center that will appear top left. Now click on "Connect to a Network" that is on the left side of screen. 1. Can you see your Network listed? 2. If you click on it to connect > do you get asked for the Access Code ? 3. If you type in the password - do you get access ? ======== If the above didn't work ...... Start > ...type in the Search Box .....devmgmt.msc ......ENTER Click on the > next to Network Adapters. 1. What is listed ? 2. Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ? =========== With the Ethernet Cable connected: Start > type in ......cmd .....now right click on cmd.exe that will appear top left of screen Click on "Run as Administrator" At the command prompt type in ........ ping 127.0.0.1 .....ENTER ..[ there is a space after ping ] You should get 4 packets sent > 4 Received > no losses If you do try the following: ping www.google.com again you should get 4 packets sent and received .....no losses I suspect that this will fail. Next try ping 192.168.1.1 [ not sure if this is correct for Home Hub but give it a try ] This should try to communicate with your router. Again you should get 4 packets sent and received > no losses. Let me know the results of the above. ============ I warn you now that this may be a long thread. There are so many variables it may take time to locate the problem. Please ensure that you answer all of the above :) Does the Home Hub have a model number or is it simply as you state - 5th Generation ? KenB Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 I'm surprised that AdwCleaner solved your problem. But all's well that ends well :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
