Hi To all.

As I have said I connected the faulty hard drive back onto the pc and put the 1st disc in quickley so to boot from disc.

and it took it!! all it downloaded was a video player?? but the second disc loaded and had the os on it and proceeded to install it. I thought YES!!! sucsess but there dosn't seem to be any internet connection, although when I click on "make a new connection" it says the internet connection is already made and if I click on "internet conections" the page is blank (showing no connections) Also there is no sound and when I click on start and turn off computer, the button labelled standby is greyed out????

Looks like Ive got over 1 problem and found another:confused:

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks.

Hi Bringe,

It looks like all you need is the appropriate drivers.

XP ( if it is XP ) does not come with many embedded drivers - unlike Win 7 for instance.

If this is a bought PC can you let us know the make and model number please ?

We may be able to locate the missing drivers for you.

==========

I think you said in the other thread that this hard drive was "failed" by the Seagate test.

If this is the case I would be very sceptical about using this drive.

Hi KenB.

Many thanks for your reply. Yes it is xp, it should be xp profesional. It is a hewlet packard desktop. ime not sure of the model so I have inserted a pic of the stickers on the top of the pc.

If you can find the missing drivers, that would be fantastic!!!

I did have to insert the product key code at some point while re-installing.

Many Thanks.

Hi,

Thanks for the photos.

You have a Hewlett Packard Compaq dx 2300

The drivers are here:

The Network Drivers have Belkin Wireless and Intel NIC ( which would be for a cable )

Give these a try.

Try the Realtek High Definition Audio driver also.

Any other drivers you need should be there too.

Hi KenB.

Many thanks for your reply, and the links.

Now ime going to show my ignorance here. the pc that I am on now and the hewlet packard are not wireless. they are wired. they are both in the same room but I can only have 1 on line at one time. But at the moment the hewlet packard is offline. So can you tell me which drivers I need and how do I get them from this (working) pc to the hewlet packard pc??

I hope that makes sense!!

Many Thanks.

Hi Bringe

On the machine that can connect to the Net ...

Click on the Intel NIC link.

Make a note of the File Name.

You should get an option to "Run" or "Save As"

Select "Save As"

Then select the Desktop as the location > click OK

This will save the drivers file to your Desktop.

You will then need a Memory Stick.

Plug this into the USB Port of the machine and go to My Computer

It will show there as a drive letter - E: for instance and maybe a name too.

Click on this to open it.

In the top right corner there will be two small squares one behind the other.

Click on this to minimise but you should still be able to see the contents of the Memory Stick on screen.

You can move this around using the blue bar across the top.

You need to be able to see the Drivers file.

Left click and hold on the drivers file,

Drag it into the Memory Stick and release the left button.

The Drivers File will be copied to the Memory Stick.

Use the Memory Stick in the problem computer to install the NIC Drivers.

You should simply click on the File and it should install.

If anything - there may be a file to click on.

This will be the "Set-Up" file.

This sounds a lot more complex than it really is :)

Hi KenB.

Many Thanks for your reply. I did what you said but the intel nic and the realtec audio drivers didn't do anything. So I downloaded almost all of them and tried that. One of them got the sound working, but still no network connection. and the standby button is still greyed out.

I tried going to control panel and clicking on network wizard and it says I need to install or configure my network cards, modems or device manager. Is there any way of finding out what network card I have and then finding the driver for it???

and as for the greyed out button, I just dont know:(

Hi again

Is this a desktop machine?

If it is:

open up the side panel and take a look at where the Ethernet ( Internet ) cable would connect.

If this is an actual card then you should be able to see a Make and Model Number on it,

If it is on-board - an integrated part of the motherboard itself - then see if the motherboard can be identified.

There should be a Make and Model number on it.

From that we may be able to identify the Network Device.

Speccy may be able to help in identifying the device too.

Speccy is an analytic program that gives you information about most things within your computer.

You can download and install the free version of Speccy from here :-

http://www.piriform.com/speccy/download/standard

Instal the program and while doing so make sure to remove any ticks for things you don't want such as toolbars or free security scans etc. if there are any.

Once installed, open the program, it will analyse your system and give you many results for different things, however the one we are interested in is to click on "Network" in the left hand column, it should show you what networking system is installed and maybe even what bit isn't working.

You can highlight and copy the result to the thread.

Hi KenB.

Many thanks for your reply and help with this.

It is a desktop and I hve taken the side off. As you can see where the blue internet goes into the pc there is only a small metal box atached to the motherboard. It has a word stamped on it but is very small I think is says "foxcom"

There is some more writing stamped on the mothrboard which I have photographed which may help.

Many Thanks.

Hi, if you have access to a working computer that can connect, download it to the desktop or somewhere you know where it is, than copy or transfer it to a flash drive to install to the computer we are working on.

However from the description and photo's, it looks like the network device is integrated on the motherboard. If not clear who made it and model number, can you refresh us on the computer make and model, we might be able to find out from knowing that.

Hi Bringe

Your motherboard is a Foxconn N1996

It was fitted into Hewlett Packard machines - amongst others.

According to the specs I found - the NIC is Realtek RTL8101L

The drivers are here:

I am assuming that your system is 32 bit.

If it is 64 bit we will need to find the appropriate drivers I think.

Hi Bringe

This is an odd one !!

Does your router have a wireless capability ?

If so ....

I suggest that you try something like this - click here

I assume that you do have a USB port ?

I am sure that the drivers I linked you to are the correct ones for your motherboard - so I am unsure as to what the problem is.

Hi, if you can, follow Kens advice regarding obtaining a USB wifi adapter, that will get you on line so that the drivers can be downloaded from its own search.

Hi Nev.

Many thanks for your reply.

Yes, it looks like the wireless option could solve the problem. but not ever having anything wireless (because I thought that wired connections were safer) I dont understand how it will go online to find the drivers when I thought It needs the drivers to get online??

What if I bought a slot in card for the internet wire to plug into, do they come with the required driver??

Also I thought about taking the hard drive out of this pc (an old emachines 4028) and installed it into the problem pc as they are both sata hard drives. would that work?? or is it not as easy as that??

Many Thanks.

Hi Bringe

If the Router has a wireless option then there really isn't a problem.

They often come with a CD with the drivers on.

You should make sure, if buying one, that it does.

What if I bought a slot in card for the internet wire to plug into

You can do this if you wish.

According to the specs I found you have 3 PCI slots. You would need a PCI Ethernet Adapter.

You also have a micro-motherboard ( smaller than standard )

You may be best getting a low-profile card.

Also I thought about taking the hard driveout of this pc (an old emachines 4028) and installed it into the problem pc as they are both sata hard drives. would that work??

It is not that straight forward.

Just popping it into the second machine will not allow it to boot up.

Windows would be looking for drivers etc. from the old motherboard - it doesn't find them - so refuses to boot.

XP is especially fussy.

If you have a full install disk it is possible to get Windows to recognise the new environment by doing a Repair Install.

This does not work with Recovery Disks.

Also the version of Windows that you have on the new Hard Disk must be exactly the same as on the CD.

If you have a full installation disk we can walk you through the "Repair" process.

Hi KenB.

Many thanks for your reply. Yesterday I spent all day messing with this pc and trawling through pages on google and finally came up with this.

http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-PCs-Compaq-Elite-Pro/Ethernet-controller-drivers-compaq-dx2300-microtower/td-p/818143

There is an entry near the bottom the page from "dwambua" and I followed his instructions and it Worked!!!! PC Online!!!! I then had to update the internet explorer, download such things like Flash" ect but its Working and thats the main thing. I also downloaded alot of chipset family drivers for graphics and now I dont have any yellow question marks in device manager and the standby button is not greyed out any more. After I got it into a useable condition I started to use it as a normal pc to see if anything else pops up at me, and the only thing that I found was that, on ebay looking at an item, if I clicked on a picture to enlarge it, it didn't enlarge. But, not a big deal. but if you have any ideas about that please tell me.

Many Thanks.
