Bringe Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Hi to All. Its me again. Just like to say a big Thankyou to KenB and Plastic Nev for helping me get this PC from the blue screen of Death to a working computer again. Slowly building up the programms to get it as it was. But I dont know if I need to download the XP Service Pack 3 or what it does anyway. I have tried going to the windows update page to see if I need it but the good old microsoft page has encountered an error [Error number: 0x80244019] how unusual !!! Many Thanks Once Again. Bringe. Plastic Nev Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Hi Bringe, you possibly require the update service updating, try this fixit on this link first and let us know if it worked or not :- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949104 If that fixit doesn't work, have a look at the instructions here :- http://www.simpletechs.com/simple-blog/windows-xp-updates-error-number-0x80244019 Nev. KenB Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 But I dont know if I need to download the XP Service Pack 3 The short answer is "Yes". This was a big update for XP and you need it for the security updates alone. I don't think SP3 is available for 64 bit installations of XP. Starbuck Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 I don't think SP3 is available for 64 bit installations of XP. That is correct Ken. SP2 was the last SP for XP x64. Quote Member of:UNITE
KenB Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 That is correct Ken. Thanks for confirming that Starbuck :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
Bringe Posted September 13, 2014 Author Posted September 13, 2014 (edited) Hi Nev. Thanks for the links. The first one didn't work as I tried fixit and ran "services.msc" but there was no "services management" in the list, only "services local" I found the "wuaueng.dll and found the version to be 5.4.3790.2180. I tried the second link which worked better and ended up downloading and installing 72 updates, and the dll version is now 7.4.7600.226 but on right clicking "system" in control panel, It still says "service pack 2" Is that sufficient or do I still need service pack 3 ?? Many Thanks. Bringe. Edited September 13, 2014 by Bringe Quote
Bringe Posted September 13, 2014 Author Posted September 13, 2014 Hi KenB. Thanks for the info, Ime sure this old pc is 32 bit. But still have not got "service pack 3" Please see my reply to Nev. Many Thanks. Bringe. Quote
Starbuck Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 Ime sure this old pc is 32 bit. It's easy to check: How to determine whether a computer is running a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the Windows operating system You can download Service Pack 3 separately: Windows XP Service Pack 3 It does say: This installation package is intended for IT professionals and developers But is the full version, so will work for you. Plastic Nev Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 You just might also need the system preparation tool first which can be downloaded from here :- http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=11282 Se how the service pack 3 from Starbuck works first though, but if it refuses to install you will need that preparation tool. Once again, to be as safe as possible you should get that service pack 3 installed for the security it has. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Bringe Posted September 17, 2014 Author Posted September 17, 2014 Hi KenB, Plastic Nev, Starbuck. Many thanks for all your help with this issue. I managed to download service pack 3 and it installed ok. Now if I right click "system" in control panel it says service pack 3. Also I have been getting the yellow shield down the bottom and installs lots of updates. I think its safe to say that this is another problem that has been solved with the help of all you kind people. What I need now is a good, free, antivirus program. Any suggestions?? Many Thanks again. Bringe. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Hi Bringe and good to know it's all a success. For a good free antivirus, I will leave Starbuck to best answer that, though Avira is one of the good ones! Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Starbuck Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 though Avira is one of the good ones! Yes, Avira AntiVir is one of the free AV's that i recommend. I also recommend: Bitdefender Free As you are running Win XP, you have to be aware that any security holes in the system will no longer be plugged by M$. So to this end i would recommend that users of Win XP, switch to a 'paid for' AV..... this will give that extra bit of protection. If you decide to go for a 'paid for' AV, i would recommend one of these: ESET NOD32 Emsisoft Anti-Malware Kaspersky Anti-Virus Any one of these will let you try for 30 days free of charge.... so you can see if it's going to be the AV for you. KenB Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Just a note: Only have one AntiVirus on your system at any one time. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
