Alphomega Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Hello, I am trying to do a fresh install of windows on my Samsung R510 Laptop. The screen is completely broken and has been totally removed. I use an external monitor in order to use the laptop. The LCD connector is no longer connected to the motherboard. However, the external monitor does not become active/receive a signal until the laptop boots to the Windows Log On screen. I cannot get the external monitor to display the BIOS/boot settings and have tried everything I can think of and searched the internet long and hard for a solution. I have disconnected the LCD completely from the motherboard, however the laptop still does not automatically send signal to the external monitor immediately. I have tried pressing FN+F4 at various points during the boot, and it has no effect. Is there anyway to disable the original monitor completely so the boot and BIOS boots immediately sending signal to the external monitor? Does anyone know where the laptop Lid Switch is located on the R510? I have read one post where it is suggested to put a magnet over the lid switch to trick the computer into thinking the lid is closed upon boot thus automatically sending signal to the external monitor. I cannot install a fresh copy of Windows without being able to see the boot screen on the laptop and this is what I need to do. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!! Quote
KenB Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Hi and welcome to ExTS :) You seem to be in a "catch 22" situation. To enter the BIOS you need to be able to see details on screen - and you don't have one......well not one that kicks in early enough. Is there anything on the hard disk that you need ? I am thinking .... If you put the hard disk in another laptop ....preferably a similar make and model number ....and install the new version of Windows there. If you transfer the hard disk back again there is a chance that it will boot up - a slim chance ......but a chance. Windows 7 is more accommodating than older OS's when doing this. May I ask why you need to re-install Win7 on a machine that has Win7 on it already ? Fn + F4 toggles between screen and monitor from within Windows so this will not solve your problem ......as you have discovered. There may be an option to select the monitor as the default from within the BIOS - but obviously you cannot see this :( Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! steve61 Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Hi. You do know a replacement screen is fairly cheap, don't you? Especially if you get a used one off e-bay. And they are easy to replace, usually all you need as a cross head screwdriver, and maybe a kitchen knife to pry things apart. Here`s a video of the procedure: Quote
