farghi Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 Hello to all you good peeps on this forum, I am at a loss to know where to go with this laptop. Its my partners laptop, bought in USA 9 years ago. She informed me that it was getting difficult to turn on ( no really !!.... ;) ) Then it refused to start at all. Diagnosis so far : 1. Power thro to motherboard 17v 2. Battery no charge 3. Clicking sound coming from M/B even when stripped bare of all removables! Possibly a charging coil on M/B ? 4. No lights on anywhere! Questions 1. Is it possible to fix clicking charging bits? Difficult to locate as the sound resonates all over the board! 2. Do I have to replace the M/B with the exact same board as there seems to be lots of generic boards with the same serial number but they fit different lap tops, how close do they need to be. Laptop Toshiba A105 product number - pn 1310A2041312 M/B V000068510 If any one can help it would be greatly appreciated Farghi Quote

I have my doubts that the clicking sound is coming from the motherboard. I suspect that it is coming from the hard drive itself. Can you take the drive out and connect it with an adapter or external enclosure to the USB port of a working computer ...... or use SATA leads and connect it direct to the motherboard of a desktop machine. The "no battery charge" could be due to the fact that the battery is 9 years old :) 17v seems a little low ............normally I would expect 19v ...........but the label on the unit itself should confirm what the voltage should be. Now I have a new router: a week later - and a bunch of new issues - thanks Sky!!) Thank you all for your kind words, the MB is bare nothing attached, when power is connected a rythymic clicking sound is audible, though it is very difficult to ascertain where it is clicking from. I have read somewhere on line, that it could be a charging coil on the MB that is opening and closing in some sort of short circuit! The computer stopped working one day and the battery was discharged ( its a newish battery - 2 years old) Hoping some one can shed some light on this ! If you cannot, I can replace the MB, how close does the serial number need to be as there are several listed on line ranging from $30 to $199 ( Its a US spec laptop) Quote

A rhythmic clicking is usually a hard drive problem ..... the drive heads cannot read the disk and are constantly hitting the stop ...hence the rhythmic clicking. Please confirm that the hard drive is out and you are still getting clicking sounds. Do you have any method of connecting your hard drive to another computer ? adapter / enclosure ? Memory, wireless card, hard drive, battery, everything that can be removed without a soldering iron has been removed, and it clicks, I can send a file with the clicks on it! Click the "Go Advanced" button below the text box when you next reply and select "Manage Attachments" if you want to attach a file. Have you checked the PSU fan / CPU fan to make sure they are not catching anything ? I am now convinced that it is not the hard drive. :) Clicking Motherboard - Never heard of that before. There are no movable parts. For a click to be heard there has to be some mechanical movement .....like a relay for instance. ICs don't click. Can you isolate the sound using a wooden spoon ? Put the spoon part to your ear and use the tip of the handle as a probe. The noise should get louder the closer you get to it. farghi Posted October 18, 2014 Author Posted October 18, 2014 I ve used a tube like a stethoscope however it was v difficult to isolate as the sound travels through the MB.I think its a goner, so what advice do you have regarding a replacement MB are they generic or specific ? There are MB available from the States new and second hand $19 - $199. Obviously the cost will dictate if its viable, there are listed MB but with slightly different numbers , do you think they would work or does have to be exactly the correct serial number for a replacement ? Again indebted to you ( MY aunt lives in Heswall- posh part of the Wirral... we only went there on special days !!:cool:) Quote

They are specific I am afraid. listed MB but with slightly different numbers I could not guarantee that they would fit. With a desktop machine there is more scope and motherboards, generally, will fit any case. With any motherboard replacement if you don't replace with exactly the same model, there is a chance that the OS will not boot up as the expected hardware is different.
