Its not a very clear pic so on the blue at the top it says "cmd.exe" then under that on the black it says "File Not Found" then under that it says "C:\WINDOWS\system32>" then there is a blinking cursor. I know the black box is dos but I dont know anything about it.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.Bringe.

Hi Bringe. If you have your XP disc, type sfc /scannow. in the run box. Note space between c and forward slash .

With XP if I remember it will ask you to insert the disc at one point.

Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.

Another option is to download the cmd.exe File and place it in C:\ windows\ System32\cmd.exe.

Have a look first and see if the file is there as often a Virus will corrupt it.

If it is delete it and paste the downloaded cmd.exe file there.

Here is where you can download the cmd.exe file from.

Let us know how you go.

Hi DSTM.

Many thanks for your replies. I was thinking that, as I have more than 1 pc running xp can I just copy the file cmd.exe from a pc that is working fine and paste it into the WINDOWS folder on the pc with the problem??

I think we are getting a little bit lost here, CMD.exe is nothing more than the command prompt, which is the black window that is opening, as to which file is missing is unknown as it only tells us that it is part of the system 32.

However can you remember when it first appeared? If so and not too long ago, a system restore might sort that out, have you tried one?

If it is too far back in time for system restore to correct, then I would first try the sfc /scannow and see what that reports as it may at least tell us properly which file is missing even if it does ask for the Windows disk.

If it does do, then the next thing will be to burn the disk as DSTM linked to the instructions for in post #4. Do that on the other fully OK XP computer to be sure of getting the right file copied correctly. The I386 folder carries all the files for XP. Please note it is a capital letter i not a figure 1.

There is a different way, however that is a way of of pointing the sfc /scannow directly to the I386 folder on the problem computer, however we don't know if that is corrupt or not, so probably best to get it copied off a known to be good computer.

Not lost at all, Nev .

XP needs cmd.exe to run properly and if it is corrupted then cmd.exe needs to be replaced back in Windows system 32. Bringe said "File not found" Windows calls it a file.

"cmd.exe allows access to the Microsoft Windows Command Prompt, also known as Microsoft DOS. To-date, cmd.exe is a 32-bit command prompt used in Windows NT, 2000, and XP and offers disk and file maintenance functions to your computer as well as network functions."

You may be right DSTM if it is only a small part of cmd.exe, I was only thinking that if it can open the cmd.exe window, it may be OK in itself.

However if a disk can either be created, or if lucky there just may be one available off E Bay or similar, then run the sfc /scannow and whatever is missing should be fixed by that.

In fact if a true Microsoft Windows xp disk can be found, then a full Windows repair could be done.

For Bringe, if you can obtain a Windows XP disk, make sure that it is exactly the same as your system, Windows XP Home, or Windows XP Professional.

Hi Nev and DSTM.

Sorry for the delay in answering. Have been away for a few days.

Many thanks for your replies about this.

What I dont understand is that apart from the notice I get on the desktop screen, everything works perfectly, so Ive decided to just live with it and just "X" it away. I dont want to do a system restore as it may delete anything that I have downloaded since it started. If it turns into anything more than it is I will think about creating a disc.

I have another problem now, relating to windows 98 so ille post it there.

Many Thanks.

Bringe.
