john-the-plotter Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 My internet is adsl though a standard bt phone line and my wireless modem is tp link td-w8961nd with tl-wn822n wireless adaptor. Phone line downstairs with a built in filtered socket. Wireless modem router downstairs plugged into phone socket. Pc upstairs, usb wireless adaptor plugged in To set up the router/modem I have to take the modem/router to the pc,plug in an ethernet cable and run a phone lead downstairs to the incoming socket. I run the set up disc and all is fine. When I unplug the modem/router and take it back downstairs it doesn't then connect to the internet even though the wireless adaptor is working ok. I have pressed the button on the adaptor and also on the back of the modem router but it still doesn't connect. It has worked in the past , but when I had to unplug for some reason it now wont work. Take the modem/router back upstairs and plug in via the ethernet cable and long phone wire it connects again. What am I doing wrong or not doing ? John Quote
Ray1000 Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 Hi John, Out of interest have you tried receiving a wireless signal direct from the router using a different device ... tablet or smart phone ... downstairs, in close proximity to the router? Ray Quote
Plastic Nev Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 HI, as well as Ray's good idea, Is it at all possible to connect the computer through either a long ethernet cable or temporarily move the computer downstairs and connect via the cable, if it will connect via cable at the downstairs point, that will at least prove there is a wireless problem or not. john-the-plotter Posted October 13, 2014 Author Posted October 13, 2014 I cant do any of the above , I am sure it is a set up problem or some setting that I have altered. When I try and set up a wireless network it appears to set it up but then goes off again. Like I said originally it was working fine until I started tweaking the computer. Computer was running slow and sometimes using 100% of cpu. I have disabled a lot of start up items and that helped the cpu usage. Thinking there may be a virus problem I did a full scan with malwarebytes and Avast and all it found was one pup which I quaranteened. I then went on to use sfc /runnow to check the files. At first it was asking for xp Pro disc. After searching microsoft website I found out how to change fp40ext.inf & ims.inf to read "Home" which I have done. Then I run sfc /runnow again, and although it now asks me for xp home disc; even when the disc is in the drive it still keeps requesting it (is this normal) My wireless network shows up on the taskbar but does not give me any option to enable it like it used to do. I think I have messed up something along the way here. My PC seems to work Ok otherwise. Quote
Ray1000 Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Hi John, I doubt it is anything you have removed from startup that has caused the problem as I only ever have one item listed in Start > msconfig > startup ... that being the antivirus. Presumably you will need to get the router and the PC back in the same place and dispense with the adaptor until you can receive a wireless signal ... you haven't mentioned the wireless code at any point but I'm sure it's been applied. KenB Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 Hi John My wireless network shows up on the taskbar At least your router is transmitting the SSID. You say that you cannot "enable it like you used to" By this - do you mean that you used to click on it and enter a Password ( Network Key ) ? Please do the following: Connect using the Ethernet cable. Then click on the Wireless Test in my signature and download the file to your Desktop. Disconnect the cable. Click on the file to run it. Click all OKs that result. The log will open in Notepad ....it may be at the bottom of your screen. Please post the results here. ================================ Then - disconnect the cable. Using wireless only ....... Start > Run > type in .....cmd ....ENTER At the command prompt type in ..... ping 127.0.0.1 ..........there is a gap after ping Then type ..... ping 192.168.1.1 ..... hit ENTER You should get 4 packets sent - 4 received - no losses in both cases ...........I assume that you will not. Do you ? ================================== Is there a wireless switch on the machine and is it "on" ? john-the-plotter Posted October 14, 2014 Author Posted October 14, 2014 Finally fixed it folks. Firstly I found out the Wireless utillity program had been deleted so I re installed it, that was a start I have had to run the router configuration program several times before I could get the wireless connection to connect. It's now working, so lets hope it stays that way. Thanks Guys for offering your advice John Quote
