Plastic Nev Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Hi Jim, It seems to depend on which type of Windows 7 you have, so you might need to type into the search bar the full cmd.exe, it should then show the small icon of the DOS type box at the top of the list. Right click on that icon and then from the menu choose "Run as administrator", You might then get the "User Account Control" box asking if you want to run it, just click yes. mij Posted October 24, 2014 Author Posted October 24, 2014 Thank you for the help Nev Hi Jim, It seems to depend on which type of Windows 7 you have, I have W7 home. so you might need to type into the search bar the full cmd.exe, it should then show the small icon of the DOS type box at the top of the list. Right click on that icon and then from the menu choose "Run as administrator", You might then get the "User Account Control" box asking if you want to run it, just click yes. I still get C:\users\jim> jim Quote
KenB Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Take a look here Jim - click here It is important to use an elevated command prompt ( Run as Administrator ) EDIT: Other option .... re-boot and constantly tap F8 about once per second. At the Advanced Startup Options select Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Plastic Nev Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Following Kens link, and if you still cannot see this as shown, http://i39.servimg.com/u/f39/14/68/69/96/comman10.jpg It is looking pretty seriously like there may well be faults in the whole operating system, and without access to a command prompt window, we can't run a system file check to prove it. Do you have any system repair disks for this computer? Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. mij Posted October 24, 2014 Author Posted October 24, 2014 I put in CMD.exe and got cmd with the black background indicating I was on a cmd line. Right clicking this gave the option (which I had not got before) of assuming admin rights. I then followed your instructions Ken and disabled teredo tunneling. I rebooted as a matter of course. Going into Device Manager saw all the teredo adapters with yellow triangles and exclamation marks. Plus the USB device yet they all (USB devices) work fine. Do I have a repair disk - I do not think so. Initially I did put in the W7 disk but unlike previous windows there seems to be no repair option on the disk....unless you know different. Jim Quote
KenB Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Hi Jim You are still seeing the Teredo Tunnelling in Device Manager ? We can try the Registry Fix if you wish ...... Again - if you are unsure just say so. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
mij Posted October 24, 2014 Author Posted October 24, 2014 I have just gone through this procedure in regedit and still see the teredo tunnel adaptors #2,#3 and #4 in device manager with the yellow triangles. This just doesn't follow logic does it? jim Quote
KenB Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Hi Jim What options do you get if you right click on teredo #2 ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
mij Posted October 24, 2014 Author Posted October 24, 2014 I went through this procedure again to see if the value of DWord was changed to 0 and it was. I went into dev manager and teredo tunnel adaptor #2 was not present. Only adaptors #3 and #4 were there. Jim Quote
mij Posted October 24, 2014 Author Posted October 24, 2014 I repeated this procedure and adaptor #3 disappeared. So I did it again (rebooting after each time) and now the lot have gone. Only the USB has a yellow triangle now. What a peculiar computer. jim Quote
mij Posted October 24, 2014 Author Posted October 24, 2014 Hi Jim What options do you get if you right click on teredo #2 ? As I mentioned before you suggested this, it went and now adaptors #3 and #4 have gone as well. jim Quote
KenB Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 now adaptors #3 and #4 have gone as well. So - is Device Manager looking as it should now ? i.e. no yellow exclamation marks or Teredo devices etc ? ( except for USB ...which we know about :) ) Right click on this and delete / uninstall it. Reboot. Does it re-appear ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
mij Posted October 25, 2014 Author Posted October 25, 2014 So - is Device Manager looking as it should now ? i.e. no yellow exclamation marks or Teredo devices etc ? Yes, all teredo adaptors #2,3# and #4 have now gone. ( except for USB ...which we know about :) ) Right click on this and delete / uninstall it. Reboot. Does it re-appear ? Yes, with a yellow triangle. In dev man I first of all tried disabling it but it stayed. Even after a reboot. So I looked for a delete but that wasn't an option but uninstall was. I used that and it disappeared from dev man only to return with yellow triangle on reboot. I did notice that there is another USB device right at the bottom of that list in dev man. Is that the reason the one under network wont load correctly? Jim Quote
KenB Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 Hi jim I did notice that there is another USB device right at the bottom That is the correct one for the USB ports. I assume there is no problem with this. The other one - under "Other Devices" - is Windows not being able to recognise it. Why it is saying "USB Controller" I have no idea !! Uninstalling it should have removed it - but Windows is still finding something that it does not know where to allocate it in Device Manager ...hence "Other Devices" What happens if you right click on this "Other Device" and click on update drivers ? Let Windows search for drivers automatically. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! mij Posted October 25, 2014 Author Posted October 25, 2014 Hi jim That is the correct one for the USB ports. I assume there is no problem with this. All USB ports work fine. I know this because I have two in the back (wired mouse and a thingamy board) and two in the front (flash stick and camera) The other one - under "Other Devices" - is Windows not being able to recognise it. There are just two options and do not include uninstall or delete. And of course uninstalling the 'other device' has little effect on rebooting. Sorry about this, must be a headache. jim Quote
Plastic Nev Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 I assumed you meant keyboard and mouse Jim, so just a suggestion, try them in the front two USB ports and remove all other USB devices, then see what device manager shows then. I have a guess that it is seeing something plugged in, but can't recognise it correctly. Also do you have access to a keyboard with the PS2 round plug, and can you try it if the computer has a PS2 port. (Purple is keyboard, green is mouse) with of course the USB keyboard disconnected. mij Posted October 25, 2014 Author Posted October 25, 2014 (edited) I assumed you meant keyboard and mouse it was a mouse and one of those drawing boards with a stylus try them in the front two USB ports and remove all other USB devices Ok removed the board and stylus and put the mouse in the front. I have a guess that it is seeing something plugged in, but can't recognise it correctly. Also do you have access to a keyboard with the PS2 round plug, Yes, it is plugged into it's round plug at the back. Ok now I will try it. jim Edited October 25, 2014 by mij Quote
mij Posted October 25, 2014 Author Posted October 25, 2014 Aaaaagh, It is still there! I did note when I was looking at the keyboard plug right next to it was two more USB sockets. That make six in all - four at the back and two at the front. I do like the front ones as it easy to connect up the camera. jim Quote
KenB Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 Aaaaagh, It is still there! Start your machine in Safe Mode. Switch on and constantly tap F8 about once per second. Select Safe Mode from the list. Go to Device Manager again. Is the problem device still showing ? If not - it is probably software that is causing the problem. KenB Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 Yes, it is still showing in safe mode. Looks as if it is probably hardware related. it disappeared from dev man only to return with yellow triangle on reboot. When you un-installed it ...and it returned Windows must be finding something. What is confusing is that it puts ( what it thinks is ) a USB Controller in "Other Devices" and not in USB Controllers at the bottom of the list. Please confirm that all USB Ports are functioning properly. If you have an external hard drive try this as it uses more power than a Memory Stick. This addition to Device Manager is not doing any harm .... just annoying :) =========== I know I said that it is probably hardware related but this will do no harm ... I think you said earlier that you had a Win7 installation Disk ? If so ... Get back to the DOS prompt ( Run as Administrator ) At the prompt type .... sfc /scannow ....ENTER [ there is a gap after sfc ] This will scan the system files for errors. You may be prompted to insert the Win7 disk. This checks the Windows System Files for errors and tries to correct any that are found. mij Posted October 26, 2014 Author Posted October 26, 2014 There is so much junk on this desk (we are in the throes of getting things back to normal) that I mistook a connection to the USB to be the drawing board and stylus when it was the sat nav being charged so it was that I disconnected from the back USB. Yes I have an external HD and will check all USB ports to see if they all power up correctly in a minute. Yes I also have the W7 Home Premium installation disk so will try the sfc /scannow on the cmd line. Before that I'd better get some tea LOL. jim Quote
KenB Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 Before that I'd better get some tea LOL. I think you need a coffee with a large scotch in it :) it was the sat nav being charged This wasn't the cause of the addition to "Other Devices" was it ? Yes I have an external HD You only need to see if you can access the drive - then try another USB Port. mij Posted October 26, 2014 Author Posted October 26, 2014 I think you need a coffee with a large scotch in it :) I finished that bottle last evening!:o This wasn't the cause of the addition to "Other Devices" was it ? No because I left it disconnected and other devices was still there. You only need to see if you can access the drive - then try another USB Port. I copied all documents across to it, some at each port. It worked fine in all ports. Having done a system scan it says it found some corrupted files and successfully repaired them. It denies me access to the log of them even in administrator mode. I have tried this in cmd mode and windows. Sorry that this took so long but I have family phone calls to make and the scan took 15 minutes. jim Quote
