Hi Jim

Since my last post I have moved about 80 miles from home for a few days :)

If you wish to read the sfc log then do the following:

Go back to the DOS screen ( Run as Administrator )

Type in the following:

findstr /c:"[sR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"

Hit ENTER

This will put a file on your Desktop called "sfc Details"

If the problem is still there then the SFC log will probably be of no use to us in solving this little dilemma :)

Ok, I will try that in a moment. I will be out myself tomorrow on Grand dad duty. It is Knockhatch adventure play ground.

I am fast bracing myself for a clean install of the operating system.

If the OS is finding something and tripping over that each time we reboot does it mean that there is something wrong with it? It can't be me as I have not had the lid of this computer.

Thanks for your patience, it is a puzzle to be sure. I'd say a very frustrating one.

Hi Jim,

If nothing else is a problem - machine running ok - not throwing up error messages etc ......then if you can live with this entry in Device Manager it really is not a problem.

Let us know how you want to proceed :)

I typed in what you said and first two times I must have got it wrong as it gave errors each time.

Third time lucky and it put a file on the desktop in notepad but it was empty.

I suppose there is nowt wrong with it as it functions ok but it irks me that we have not got to the bottom of it. Also why will it not play the DVD that plays on my wife's DELL which is also running W7 media player? It plays every other DVD I have here....... quite a few.....over 100.

I'd rather go for it and if needs be do a completely clean install.

Can you stand it?

I don't think there is anything going on that is detrimental to the system.

I am sure Nev and I will stay with you as long as we can keep coming up with suggestions :)

This is always a last resort.

Refresh my memory ..... if you right click on the problem device in Device Manager what options do you have ?

( I think you said earlier that there were only two ?? )

Thanks for the reminder regarding this odd DVD Jim, I wonder now if it is something missing regarding the DVD player that is giving this odd USB driver fault.

This makes me think that there may be something not quite selected correctly even in the BIOS perhaps.

However, have a good look at the more technical stuff actually written on the DVD disk itself, for example does it state dual layer, is it blue ray, or what else you can find that isn't written on one of the other DVD's that do play OK.

Knowing what difference there is if any might give us a clue as to what might be missing that is stopping it from playing.

There is little difference between disks apart from the numbers around the central hole in the DVD. It is only just visible with a magnifying glass against the brightness of the screen. These are all art by the way, watercolour, acrylic, oils and pastels. The only info on the DVD is the title, a picture of one of the scenes and the name of the artist.

There is one other anomaly which arose trying to find out if it was a lack of updating. After updating via MS last week It would not go online. I got around it by restoring it to a previous registry.

I dare not update any more. So I have to do something about it.

Hi Jim,

From the information in that Speccy report, the CD/DVD drive is a Lite-on model iHAS 124-04

Go here and lets see if updating the firmware might just get it to read the disk.

http://www.liteonit.eu/en/optical-storage-dvd-rw-internal/ihas124-04/firmware.html

Click on the red link "Smartpack" then the download for the smartpack firmware auto upgrade etc. Don't bother with the first, "Smart erase"

Hopefully that might sort that problem of not being able to read the disk, and you never know it might get rid of the USB driver warning too.

I clicked on your link and got a different page it seems. There was no red link for the smartpack but googled it and found it anyway. The cd got updated from 4LO3 to 4LO6 so it looked as if it was pretty out of date going by that anyway.

The up-dating has had no effect on the playability of the disk.

The up-dating has had no effect on the yellow triangle seen under 'other devices' in device manager, it is still there.

Just as a matter of interest Jim, and hopefully will rule out the CD/DVD drive altogether, if you don't mind taking the cover off the computer, (Power off first) find the leads going into the CD/DVD drive and pull them off, then boot up again and see if that yellow mark has gone or not with the drive disconnected.

Thanks for that Nev. I have done that and when I rebooted I got a message telling me that the optical device could not be found. Because I had indicated to smartpack that I wanted it check for updates on Windows launch I got that message as well.

There is still a USB controller under other devices with a yellow triangle though.....grrrrrrrr.

I get

Update driver software

Disable

Uninstall

Scan for hardware changes

I do not know if it significant or not but I have used a magnifying glass to look at the Yellow thingy in dev man. The icon is not a USB connector as is in the USB controller in its proper place. It is of a box device similar to a computer. I do not know what that icon refers to but it isn't USB is it?

Hi Jim. I checked my Device Manager and it shows System Devices not "Other Devices"

Other devices could be a card you have in one of the slots like a sound card, etc.

If you have I would remove any cards you have installed. Reboot and check Device manager again.

Just a long shot as Ken and Nev have just about covered nearly everything it could possibly be.

This is a strange one.

My line of thinking if you was to reinstall, if it was a card then you are back with driver issues all over again.

I am clutching at straws here Ken and Nev.

Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.

Hi Jim

Right click on the device > Properties > Events

There is an "Information" box .............does it give any info there ?

There is also a "Time Stamp" ....was the device ever started ?

Can you feed back info from here please ?

Right click on the device > Properties > Events

I do not get the option events.

Neither do I get this option.

Same again.

So are we Dougie ......... running out of options ???

I agree with DSTM - if it is hardware ....which I think it is ( ref Safe Mode ) then a re-install is not going to help.

What options do you get when you hit "Properties" Jim ?

What cards do you have plugged into the motherboard ?

Network Card / Sound Card / Video Card ??

I do not know what cards are plugged into the mother board. How would I recognize them? Is there a way that the software can tell us what we want to know? Can Speccy or Belarc advisor or even hi-jack this or similar tell us?

Thanks DSTM and while the computer was opened I reconnected the DVD drive or as the computer called it the optical device.

Looking at it the only card is the wireless router card, it has an aerial sticking up at the back outside. A BTW is that I use W7 Premium Home (or is that the other way around?)

New to uploading images to this site - nearly every site is different. I took two photo's so here is the bottom half.

Jim

This has not showed the second image for the second time. It has a red circular shape over to the RHS.
