DSTM Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Hi Jim Try and get the lower part image to post again. Have you the latest drivers installed for the Network Adaptor? Have you identified the Network adaptor? Expand Network Adapters. If the Wireless Card is identified its name will be shown under Network Adapters. If it is not identified you might have an unknown device for example: "(?) Network Controller" In order to identify the device, right click and select properties. Select the details tab and the select Hardware Ids under properties: Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
mij Posted October 28, 2014 Author Posted October 28, 2014 (edited) I'll try and if it's like some sites I visit I'll have to call it another name. jim No! It wont accept the second photo for some reason and the red circle appears indicating some mistake somewhere. It cannot be size as it is much smaller than the first. mij Posted October 28, 2014 Author Posted October 28, 2014 I have followed what you suggested with the network adaptors and did the same for the offending USB controller. This is the Hardware ID of the network adaptor and is an HP 802.11g wireless Network Adaptor' It downloaded from the net an updated driver for the Microsft Virtual wifi miniport adaptor. The other two drivers were up to date. mij Posted October 28, 2014 Author Posted October 28, 2014 (edited) I have obviously got something very wrong as that 2nd image is not uploading. I have put it on photobucket so that you can see it. The url I have copied here, I hope that is ok. http://s1373.photobucket.com/upload I do not know if that is a clickable link or whether it has to be copied and pasted, but you'd probably know more about that than me. jim AAAGH ! That has not worked either. I'd better give up 'till help arrives. One last stab, try this http://s1373.photobucket.com/user/mijjey1/library/ Edited October 28, 2014 by mij Quote
DSTM Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/ag361/mijjey1/bottom_zpsdb179559.jpg That link worked, Jim Looks like the heatsink and Fan need a good blow out. Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
mij Posted October 28, 2014 Author Posted October 28, 2014 That link worked, Jim Looks like the heatsink and Fan need a good blow out. I'm glad that photo-bucket worked. Yes I suppose it does need a vacuum/blow through. I should have noticed while I had the bonnet off. Still I don't think that is the last time I get the cover off :). jim Quote
Plastic Nev Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Hi Jim, I use photobucket myself for a lot of my pictures, to get the best results, where you see the IMG code, depending on how you are viewing it either right click and select copy, or if just viewing the one photo a normal click on the IMG code will tell you it has copied, so then just right click and choose paste into the reply box here. As shown here, a click on the photo will get you this page. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y282/plasticpig/Photobucketcopy_zps71b65e26.png Lets go right back to the start of when all this went wrong. You explained that a DVD disk you had, shut down the computer when it was put into the drive. There is just a remote possibility that this faulty DVD was actually infected with malware so have you scanned the system with antivirus or antimalware programs since? If so what was the result, if not please do run some scans and let us know. Finally, we mainly recommend not to use vacuum cleaners for clearing dust as they can develop static charges, especially between a metal vacuum nozzle and the rest of the computer which could result in damage to sensitive components. Much safer to use compressed air can or similar to blow dust and fluff out. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. mij Posted October 28, 2014 Author Posted October 28, 2014 On the image Nev I'll try to remember that for next time. On the vacuum front I had heard of that somewhere before. I will get a can of compressed what ever to blow them clean. I will now scan for malware and viruses. jim Quote
DSTM Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Hi Jim. I also noticed your Ram stick looks to be in the wrong slot. Rule of thumb best to put the Ram stick in the slot as close to the heatsink as possible. Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.

Anticipating future events I have another memory stick on its way here, I need to get a pressurized can for blowing and whilst the lid is lifted move the memory stick next to the m/board. jim Quote
KenB Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Thanks for the photo Jim I do not know what cards are plugged into the mother board. It looks as if you only have one removable card - and this looks like a LAN ( Network ) card that you connect the router ( ethernet ) cable to. Is this correct ? Do you use this ? If so - I assume that it works normally ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test

Yes it works fine and I use it to go online most of the day. I have now completed an anti-malware-bytes scan and it found something, mainly pups I think but I do not know how to show its log. A full scan with MS Essentials found nothing but if the previous AMWB was effective little wonder. jim Quote
Plastic Nev Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Hi Jim, just have a look at Starbucks instructions for copying and pasting the log of what malwarebytes found here :- http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/15547-Before-posting-for-Malware-Removal-help-WinXP-Vista-Win7-Win8-amp-Win8-1#.VE_z3ckuGSo Just post that log for now and if anything looks worrying we will let the malware removal guys know. mij Posted October 29, 2014 Author Posted October 29, 2014 Last night I got really cheesed with this and googled the problem. Every time I do this I find that somebody else had this problem a year or more ago. This time was no exception and that person was like me - really cheesed. So he used Driver Detective and that found him all the drivers he wanted. There followed lots of peeps that would recommend otherwise and with a lot of sorry tales. Some years ago I used them for quite some time with only good experiences. I googled until I found a free one with no complaints against it (I do google complaints against) Easy Driver. Although its name changes around to Driver Easy when downloading and installing. It solved this 'other devices' of mine and I don't know where it went. The yellow triangle/exclamation mark has gone and I am in the middle of downloading/installing other drivers. It is only free if you take a throttled speed connection - which means a couple of overnight jobs. If you take the 'pro' path I assume you get the download at whatever your normal download speed is. jim Quote
mij Posted October 29, 2014 Author Posted October 29, 2014 A big thank you to Ken Nev and Doug for sticking with this problem. It was quite elusive and I did think this was unique - but it wasn't. Somebody else had had that same thing twelve months ago. Jim Quote
KenB Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Well done Jim !! It just shows what a bit of determination can do. I don't suppose you know what the missing driver was do you ? mij Posted October 29, 2014 Author Posted October 29, 2014 I don't suppose you know what the missing driver was do you ? They ran past so quick that I only caught a glimpse of AMD, VIA, ATI and such. Because I opted for the throttled download it will take some time to play catch up. I'll not up-date the MS side of this machine in case it stops me going online because ATM my wife's DELL wont accept any inputs what so ever.....so she said when I took her in a cuppa just now. We have had her grand son and his partner staying whilst he completed his teacher training. My wife left her machine to him and since he has gone she has tried to get rid of all the stuff that he has had to use to do his course and keep up with pupils. But I'll start a new thread for that one :). It sounds like an erasure and clean install but the disk she got was an Up-grade - we both had Vista before. jim Quote
