So yes I can, errm ok. My question is really stupid, but really im stressing over it.

Ive bought my daughter a laptop for christmas. And she wants a printer to connect to it. Is this possible?

Hi Jokia,

First of all ... yes, a printer will connect to a laptop.

It can be wired - physically connected to the laptop by a cable - or, wireless.

A modern wireless printer could be situated in a different room and still be operated from the laptop.

One of the main ingredients in choosing a printer is the subsequent cost of the ink cartridges.

It’s not unusual for the price of new cartridges to be almost as much as the original cost of the printer.

If you bought the laptop from one of the larger stores you may benefit from popping back and having a look at what they have on offer, making a point of asking about the cost of the ink and making sure it is compatible with the laptop you have chosen.

Hi again jokia

Firsty - there are no stupid questions. You are a bit confused and want answers - that's what we are here for :)

Ray100 has said most of what I would.

Let's check - post the make and model number of the laptop and we can check the specs.

It would need at least one USB port for the data transfer cable from the printer to connect to.

This is assuming that you opt for a "wired" printer.

[ most laptops have this option ...but it is worth checking ]

Also - it is worth checking to see if it has a wireless option - again most do.

Do you have a wireless router ( wireless network ) in the house to connect to the internet ?

If not - it may be an easier to go for the wired option.

The set up for an "ad hoc" wireless printer is shown here - click here

[ ad hoc = no router involved ]

As you can see - it is not straight forward. If you follow the steps one at a time it should be OK.

A wired printer simply connects to the laptop after you install the drivers ( CD ) that comes with the printer.

Let us have the Make and model number of the laptop.

Let us know if you have a router for internet connection please.

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!
