PCI-E has less I/O pins count

PCI-E has a faster Data Transfer Speed compared to the older PCI

PCI-E has a Smaller footprint

If your looking at a new Motherboard I would be looking at a PCI-E slot !

Hi George

I think your post is related to the thread that you have running re: video cards

Take a look at this image below:

The white slots are PCI.

The blue slot is PCIe

What is the difference?

Apart from the obvious - PCI being shorter - the slots are not similar and the cards that fit them are not interchangeable.

PCI is used for some older video cards and is still used for things like Network Adapters and Sound Cards.

PCIe = PCI express is primarily used for video cards.

PCIe replaced VGA as the connection to use for video cards.

PCIe is very much faster that PCI and if you had a PCI video card some software just would not run properly.

If you need any more information just ask :)

I am confused too George.

You say in the other thread that the card with the short backplate "doesn't fit "

Nev researched that card and suggested it was PCI ............should fit the white slots.

I found two sites with specs for your specific machine and both specs suggest that you have a PCIe x 16 slot too.

I don't know where to go from here as I am totally confused.

A photo of the motherboard will give us the info we need - any chance of posting this ?

Hi George

That is a PCIe x 16 Video Card.

The white slots you show are PCI ( not PCIe )

There is another slot(s) in the top right of the photo .......... do you know what this is ?

Black slot? ...showing in one photo ........covered by cables in the second.

According to the specs for your machine there is one PCIe x 16 slot on your motherboard. [ see Expansion Slots ]

Is this your machine ?

Hi George

What you have in your hand looks like a "Riser Card "

2 full-height PCI available via optional riser card,

This quote is from the specs I posted in my last post.

What is the black "slot" underneath the cables in your other photo ?

Can you see a ref number on the motherboard itself - it will be in larger letters / numbers

That is strange, the original model number you quoted is for a PCI card, yet that one is as Ken said definitely PCIe, and being low profile now we can see the PCI extension unit removed, it should fit that black slot George.

Hi Nev it might fit but if you look at my next photo the grilled part below the silver backing plates is where the rear of the card would need to come out of

That's the strangest thing George ??

You have 2 PCI and a PCIe slot that you cannot use.

The removable section that you have hold of is an "optional extra" - so the original design was for the 3 slots that, from your photos, cannot be used.

Does the plate with the square grill holes come off ?

Mind you - it doesn't look as if it should.

I will see if I can find a manual.

the only numbers i can see are404304-001

Found this - click here

This doesn't appear to be your case - or is it ?

Also found this - click here

This guy is using the PCIe x16 slot

Edit; looking at this again ....this looks like a vertical case not the SFF case that you have.

Yours does not appear to have the knock-out strips.

Also found this - click here

A PCIe Riser ........although I cannot believe that to use and card in that machine you have to buy an adapter.

Still looking for a manual.

For some reason the network I am on ( not at home ) will not let me download anything from this site ??

The manuals for your PC are here - click here

I wanted to find out about fitting a video card.

Is it necessary to purchase an additional piece of kit - i.e. a riser ?

Hi George and Ken, I downloaded and had a look at this manual from this link

http://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.BINARYPORTLET/public/kb/docDisplay/resource.process/?spf_p.tpst=kbDocDisplay_ws_BI&spf_p.rid_kbDocDisplay=docDisplayResURL&javax.portlet.begCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&spf_p.rst_kbDocDisplay=wsrp-resourceState%3DdocId%253Demr_na-c00771559-3%257CdocLocale%253Den_US&javax.portlet.endCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken

It seems there are three variations of the same model, a convertible mini tower, a small form factor, and also an ultra slim desktop.

if you can let us know which type you have we might stand a chance of knowing what needs to be done next to be able to use that PCIe black slot.

Here are the three types in order,

It is actually from page 25 onwards however the optional PCI riser thing will have to be discarded as in this note :-

"NOTE

The PCI and PCI Express slots support only low profile cards unless an optional riser is

installed. The optional riser supports two full height standard PCI slots. If the riser is installed, the

PCI Express x16 expansion slot is inaccessible."

However what puzzles me is from Georges photo's, the removable plates don't seem to line up with the PCIe slot as it shows in the drawings, unless we are looking at it from an odd angle.
