Hello all. I am "sometimes" unable to connect to the internet unless I connect an ethernet cable. Sky sent me a new router, but it's no different.

The weird thing is, Sometimes I can connect & use the laptop ok, but when I come back to use the internet again & open the lid, I can't connect? As I type now, I'm using the cable link. Any help appreciated.

I'm sure an expert will be along soon but, in the meantime, you might try going into Power Options, choose Balanced Plan, then go into Advanced Power Settings, scroll down to Wireless Adapter Settings, expand and choose Maximum Performance.

I experienced a similar issue with an Acer laptop and can well understand your frustration. The above didn't solve the problem in my case but I believe it has for some others.

You aint gonna believe this, but I've just spent app 45 mins talking to a SKY C/S wallah & after all the instructions were followed to the letter, she came up with "I'm sorry, but you'll need someone to link your router to your laptop. (I haven't a clue how to do that, but then again, I'm only a retired Marine Engineer, not a PC whizz-kid) & it would appear neither was this rep from SKY. She was back & forth trying to find a solution (bless her) from a colleague, instead of putting that person on the line which was my suggestion.. Can't wait for the feedback, SKY will certainly ask for.

So here I am, on my knees, linked up to the router via the cable, whilst the laptop is perched on a knife edge. Progress eh!

Try what Woodworker suggests - no harm done if it doesn't fix it for you.

"sometimes" unable to connect to the internet unless I connect an ethernet cable.

This implies a problem with the wireless side of the router - or your machine.

One thing to try first is to change the channel that the router broadcasts on.

To do this you need to access the router software. ( ask if you need advice on this )

The setting will be under "Wireless" or similar - routers are all different.

The usual settings are 1 - 6 - or 11

If it is set to channel 6 try one of the other two.

It could be that a neighbour or yourself is using something that interferes with the wireless signal.

This could be a cordless phone for instance.

Let us know the make and model number of the router please.

( from experience - this could take some time as there are so many options )

And be even more grateful you're not with *EE* - Their Technical Support situated in Calcutta is diabolical.

No change I'm sorry to say. The whizz-kid suggested I purchase a USB wireless adpt, as he could connect to the router with his phone, but still not to the PC. I expected to simply plug it in & link it to the router, but nothing came up for me to enter password or pin etc that's on the router info. I installed the CD that came with the adpt, but that told me nothing. I tried the Woodworker method, but again, no joy.

Well, I'll be bu**ered, just wouldn't accept that I couldn't sort this out & get rid of the ethernet link. So I started again & inserted the CD then spotted a 'help' guide, that I swear wasn't there before :embarassed:

Really had no idea what I was doing, but just trying to follow the guide was a puzzle, because some of the info didn't tally with what came up on screen, for eg, at one point it asked to enter a particular code, but no indication where to find this code, so I just entered a figures & letters number on the router which was rejected & tried another, this time it went in & I was then directed to exit the wizard.

So 'sorted' is the word (I hope) but looking at the signal strength on the bottom browser, it's only showing 3 bars out of 5, but I'm online. Whooopeee!

Thanks for trying to help.:)
