Hi

I assume that you have seen this in Device Manager ?

Go back to Device Manager > right click on the SM Bus Controller > click on "Uninstall"

Reboot your computer.

Check again in Device Manager.

Windows should have re-installed the drivers.

If it hasn't we will have to look for the chipset drivers for your motherboard.

ty..tryed that same problem... the os has been put on by the guy i got my pc off secondhand..so i am assuming its something that has happened since the os has been upgraded..i think he said it was xp before..i cant go back to him as he was moving home hence the sale of said pc...can this be sorted? also what does the Bus controller do? will it cause problems if the driver isnt installed? sorry i am a worrier lol ;)

what does the Bus controller do?

The System management Bus Controller helps monitor system temperatures and fan speeds etc.

This is often a problem when XP has been upgraded.

Please do the following:

Start > type in .....dxdiag .....hit ENTER

Click on "Display" on the toolbar.

I need to know what is written against "Name" and "Chipset" please.

I am hoping is says "Intel H61"

If it does the socket is LGA 1155 - [ This is for my reference .... :) ]

I should be able to get the drivers for you after you confirm.

Hi

DirectX ( dxdiag ) is confirming Intel - but nothing else.

I see that you have Speccy.

If you click on "Motherboard" - this should confirm Intel for Chipset Vendor.

We also want the Southbridge Model number please.

I want to be sure that I direct you to the correct Chipset Drivers .

If Speccy doesn't show the details I will have to go off the specs for the motherboard that I found.

Hi, further to Kens advice, if you open Speccy again, then click on "File" at the top right, then "Publish snapshot".

In the next box click "Yes", you will then get a URL address, copy and then paste that into your next reply please.

From that we should be able to see all the model number details we may need.

Just so you know there are no personal details given, only information about your system, here is the similar URL for my own rather basic Packard Bell machine.

Hi mumblebee

Thanks - that confirms that I had it right earlier.

Your Chipset is Intel.

The Model Number = H61 ( as I thought earlier )

Take a look here

I have checked and although there are various options the most recent version is 9.4.0.1026

Click on 61MD-V and download the Chipset Drivers from there.

Hopefully these will work for you.

These should work with Win 8 and Win 7

Hi, please first get those drivers installed from the links KenB gave and lets get the system working correctly.

After doing that, The Speccy link is quite informative for us and gives us information of further help.

I see that windows updates are turned off and the last set of updates was the 18th of last month.

Also you are still running Internet explorer 9.

Is there a reason for this, and if a problem with it we can possibly help sort that out, if it isn't connected to the fact the drivers you need are missing.

Ideally for security your updates should be at least turned on to a manual setting so you can see when updates are available and allow the download and install.

Also for security reasons you should also update Internet explorer to version 11.

Next thing is although I am not familiar with the AVG anti virus, does that have a firewall built in? If not you should really have a firewall installed.

After that and scrolling down to near the bottom, the voltages are of a little concern, the 12 volt is only showing 8.88 volts, and also the CMOS battery, is only 1.608 volts, it should be near or exactly 3.00 volts. So the small coin battery should ideally be renewed.

If you need any help sorting those things out please let us know as that low voltage for the 12 volts may be sign the power supply is struggling, add to that the low CMOS voltage due to the small on board battery going flat, will soon give you other problems.

Hi, Ken has said to me, there is a chance that the missing drivers may be the reason for it reporting the low voltages, so once you have them installed and providing they work we will ask for a new Speccy report then. Best of luck and lets hope those drivers do the job for you.

Hi,

Now you have the correct drivers installed, you won't see the "Other devices" as now there is no problem, device manager has nothing to report. In other words, previously it knew something was wrong, but without the drivers it didn't know what!

At least the original problem has been cured.

I see the voltages are still showing low, however if they actually were that low, it would be giving a lot of problems, so it just might be a wrong reading from Speccy, so lets see what two other analysing softwares show us.

Please download and install Speedfan from here :-

http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

Also download and install CPUID monitor from here :-

http://www.cpuid.com/downloads/hwmonitor/1.25-setup.exe

If you can post screen shots from those two it will hopefully tell us Speccy might be wrong, as sometimes it can be with voltages.

Also, although you don't use Internet Explorer it should be updated due to the security risk. However now you do have Windows updates working, you may find the next updates might rectify that, if it doesn't it can be downloaded from the Microsoft site any way.

Good to see that the Chipset Drivers did their job :)

Your Device Manager is now showing as it should.

Let's see what the additional scans that Nev has suggested produce.

I have my doubts that the system would boot up if the 12v rail was only getting 8.8v

This is VERY odd !

We have two different pieces of software - each showing EXACTLY the same voltages to 1/1000 of a volt ???

We have 8.88v on the +12 / -12 / and -5v rails. How odd.

This cannot be correct. ( Unless there is a short somewhere ...but you would have problems if this was the case )

mumblebee - do you have a voltmeter or can you borrow a voltmeter ?

The check is simple - take a reading direct from the 20(4) way connection on the motherboard.

I wrote a tutorial on checking a PSU some time back - but this one is much clearer - click here

I assume that the system is running ok?

Booting up fine?

No long delays booting up ?

Indeed strange readings, the BIOS just might show differently, but the actual check with a meter is possibly the only real way to be sure. I would also include a check of the CMOS battery as that shows as a lot too low as well.

dont know anyone with a volt metre that i can think of... i have had no probs with the pc other than the one thats been sorted with the chipset lol do i need to be worried about this voltage thingy..

do i need to be worried about this voltage thingy..

I don't think so.

If the computer is running OK - booting up OK - then there is nothing to worry about.

Regarding the CMOS battery that Nev mentioned ... is your date and time showing correctly in the bottom right corner of the screen ?

If so - then I would suggest that the CMOS battery is OK too.

If it was as low as the reading suggests the date and time would be messed up.
