Bringe Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 Hi Everyone. Here I am again with yet another problem That I hope I can get some help with. My old emachines pc started giving me some jip recently, it decided to turn itself off at random and got to the point where as soon as it started to boot up it would turn off. There is so much stuff like music, pictures, videos, ect on the hard drive that I want to rescue. I dug out the system restore dvd and put it in. I remember from ages ago that it gives a choice how to recover the system. 1 is to recover the system and backup all files and folders into c:/backup. or 2. Total recovery and delete all files and folders. I chose number 1. which all went well until right at the end where I got a message saying "recovery not complete, run recovery dvd again" After doing this for 4 times I thought I could do this all day going round and round. My next idea was to take the hard drive out and make it a slave drive on another pc. but that idea fell flat as well. If you look at the picture, the hard drive I want to recover from is the one in the cage and has a power input and jumper pins just like a pata hard drive (these were not in use) and a power input and interface conection the same as a sata hard drive (there were in use) So, is it possible to buy an adapter to change the sata interface into a pata interface, therefore being able to make it a slave and recover my data?? Any help here will be much appreciated. Bringe Quote
KenB Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 Hi There are various adapters on the market. You could look at something like this - click here [ be sure to read any reviews for your chosen product :) ] Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Plastic Nev Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 Just to recover data, you can get adapters for IDE to USB connection, saving having to actually go into the other computer to connect it, as well as the type shown in Kens link. Just have a look round the Amazon site that Ken linked to. Let's hope that the hard drive itself is OK enough to do so and not the reason for the fault. Nev. Bringe Posted November 18, 2014 Author Posted November 18, 2014 Hi KenB and Plastic Nev. Many Thanks for your replies and advice. I bought an adapter from Ebay for less than £3.00. Item number 320916558332 If it works I will retrieve all my data then format it to wipe it clean, then put it back into the emachines pc and try the system restore dvd again. Just 1 question though, When the sata hard drive is in line as a slave, what do I do with the jumper pins on the pata IDE hard drive. At the moment its set as master??? Many Thanks. Bringe. Quote
KenB Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 When the sata hard drive is in line as a slave, what do I do with the jumper pins on the pata IDE hard drive. At the moment its set as master??? If you are linking the SATA drive via IDE there may be a couple of options. Your present IDE drive will be set as Master. If you are sharing this cable then set the "SATA" drive to Slave. If the "SATA" drive has its own cable and motherboard connection then this will be set to Master. Basically - if the "SATA" drive is sharing a cable then set it to "Slave" There is a good explanation here - click here If you get it wrong you will do no damage to the drive :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Bringe Posted November 19, 2014 Author Posted November 19, 2014 Hi KenB and Plastic Nev. Many Thanks for your replies and advice. My little adapter arrived today and I set it all up and the sata drive showed up in "my computer" as an aditional hard drive, I was actualy surprised that it worked, but when I went into it I found that all my pictures, videos, and music was not there. Everything else was there, like programme files and such like but not my data!!!! I guess my last chance is to ask if you know of a good data recovery programme??? Many Thanks. Bringe. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 Hi Bringe, Firstly I am glad the adapter worked OK, however the data loss may be because of the attempts to try the unsuccessful recovery or repair. As far as a file recovery program there is one called "Recuva" but sometimes seems not very good. Strangely enough Ken helped another member who had lost some files and other data accidentally and recommended a free file recovery software called Puran File Recovery v1.2 from here :- http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filerecovery/fl/puran-file-recovery-review.htm The thread for that one is here and worth a read through first, especially Kens instructions. http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/16556-I-deleted-all-my-photos-on-my-computer-how-do-I-restore-them#.VGzqo8lXum0 In your case, you may be able to move recovered files onto the computer rather than having to try and save them to a flash drive, however give it a try and see how you get on. Bringe Posted November 26, 2014 Author Posted November 26, 2014 Hi KenB and Plastic Nev. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. And thanks for the suggestions on data recovery. Its taking quite a while to do a deep scan with each program I try with no results. But I did try the free trial of Euseus. It took 2 days to do a deep scan and all my lost data showed up:D Problem is, to save it I have to buy it and they want 70 dollars for it:mad: Ime trying to find a hacked version on a torrent somewhere, Any Ideas??? Many Thanks. Bringe. Quote

Bringe Posted November 28, 2014 Author Posted November 28, 2014 Hi KenB. Sorry about that last message, I was getting very annoyed to know that my data was there but had to pay $70 to get it. But I suppose if anything actually works then its worth paying for. Ime trying another one at the moment called "Disc Recovery Wizard 4.1" It indicated that it was free but now while its scanning it says "evaluation version" Its been scanning since yesterday and its now on 92% so Ille find out whether its worked and the cost shortly. Ille let you know. Many Thanks. Bringe. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 Hi Bringe, this is another free file recovery program, unfortunately as yet we haven't had chance to evaluate it fully ourselves though one of our other staff is hoping to do so. It comes from a company the make a program uninstaller that I have tested and found to be pretty good, so hopefully their file recovery works just as well. http://www.wisecleaner.com/wisedatarecoveryfree.html We will be interested to know how successful you find it too please. Bringe Posted November 29, 2014 Author Posted November 29, 2014 Hi KenB. The scan with disc recovery wizard 4.1 eventually finished, but they want 140 dollars for it:( bringe. Quote
Bringe Posted November 29, 2014 Author Posted November 29, 2014 Hi Nev. Thanks for the link. I have just downloaded it and about to give it a go. It seems that it may take some time to deep scan (2 days) I will let you know what happens then. Many Thanks. Bringe. Quote
Bringe Posted December 1, 2014 Author Posted December 1, 2014 Hi Nev. I tried the wise data recovery free, but it was quite basic. It only had 1 scan button, there was no facillity for deep scan, and it only took about 30 minutes and didn't show any of the data that ime after. I know its there because of the 70 dollars program I tried previously. Ive tried a couple more as well. Ime going through the list of free programs on download.com, but I think I will have to pay the money in the end. But if I find a free one that lets me recover for free ille let you know. Many Thanks. Bringe. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted December 2, 2014 Posted December 2, 2014 Though I don't like saying it, most free versions of paid for software, whatever the purpose, are nearly always a bit basic in comparison to the main one. It may well come to having to bite the bullet and pay the $70 I am afraid. We do always recommend the free stuff where available as in a lot of cases it is quite often all that is needed. However not always! Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. If Free PC Help has helped you then please consider a donation. Bringe Posted December 3, 2014 Author Posted December 3, 2014 Hi Nev. My trawling through download.com has finally paid off. I found a program called lazesoft Recovery Suite Home. If you type "Data Recovery Software" into download.com, its on the second page. It took about 5 minutes to scan my half dead hard drive, then showed me all my deleted data which I have now saved. and another thing is that it keeps your old titles or numbers, and dosn't start renaming files from 00000000001 lol. There is an option to pay for an upgrade but I got what I wanted for free!!! There are other functions on the program which may be usefull, but for now ime going to format this hard drive, put it back in the original pc and install the OS. Then be back to where I was about 3 weeks ago. Many Thanks. Bringe.:) Quote
Plastic Nev Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 Great news Bringe and hope the rest of it all works out OK. Thanks for the update and let us know if it does all work out OK. Nev. Bringe Posted December 14, 2014 Author Posted December 14, 2014 Hi KenB & Plastic NeV. Only partial success ime afraid. Some of my videos dont run, and my jpegs dont display. Just get a white screen with "drawing failed" in the middle. And after formatting the 200gb hard drive it now shows up as 55gb:confused: I would be very gratefull if you have any ideas how to cure these 2 problems. Many Thanks. Bringe. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 Hi Bringe, sorry to say that those files that don't work, the video and JPG files must be too badly damaged, possibly by being partially overwritten so I don't think you can go much further with them. The drive itself I am not sure about, how did you format it? Ken may have some idea's as to why it is only showing 55GB if we know what method you used to do the format. Nev. KenB Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 200gb hard drive it now shows up as 55gb Take a look in Disk Management for me please: Start > Run ....type in ....diskmgmt.msc .....ENTER [ not sure this works with XP ...........if not ... click here ] If you only have the one hard drive it will show up as Disk 0 If you can post a screen shot of this that would be great. Bringe Posted December 14, 2014 Author Posted December 14, 2014 Hi NeV. Thanks for your reply. There's a bit of a story here. After I had recovered all my files from the 200gb hard disc, I formatted it by right clicking on the drive in "my computer" and click format and checked the fast format box. That went ok, it still showed 185gb. Now I was going to put it back into the original pc and reinstall the os. But I thought I would clone it instead. That went ok or so I thought. I put it back into the original pc and booted up. The pc wanted to go online to install drivers but no matter what I tried I could not get a connection. Tried several times but the wizard kept saying that the connection was already configured and the light was on where the internet line plugs in. In desperation I thought I would revert back to my plan to reinstall the os. On trying this I got a message saying the hard drive needs formatting, so I clicked ok, then shortly after got a message saying the hard drive cant be formatted. So, I removed the hard drive and put it back into the other pc (the one where I needed the adapter for) and again right clicked the drive as before, and it came up as being 55gb I hope that gives an idea as to whats happening. Really would appreciate some help or advice here. Many Thanks Bringe. Quote

Bringe Posted December 14, 2014 Author Posted December 14, 2014 Hi KenB. Many thanks for your reply. I think that you and I must have been typing at the same time. Anyway, I have attatched a couple of screen shots, I hope they help. Ive noticed that it is now down to less than 8meg. KenB Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 Hi You have 2 hard drives on this system. Disk 0 [ C: ] = 55.9 GB [ This will have Windows on it ] You have a second hard drive [ Disk 1 ] which is E: and has an 8MB partition ...BUT has 186GB unallocated. In other words - Windows cannot see it or use it. This is the 200 GB drive that you referred to earlier :) Something went a bit wrong when you formatted the drive. Can you attach this drive to Win 7 / Vista or are you stuck with XP ? It is easier to sort the "unallocated" area out from Win 7 rather than try using XP.
