Quirkie Posted November 26, 2014 Posted November 26, 2014 Hi, My brother's Laptop keyboard won't work. It was working just fine. I had to restart his computer after installing avast for him and then when it came back on the keyboard wouldn't work. It's Windows 8.1 Help! Quirkie Quote
KenB Posted November 26, 2014 Posted November 26, 2014 Can you start up in Safe Mode ? Switch on and tap ( very fast ) F8 Also try SHIFT + F8 With Win 8 and 8.1 it is very difficult to catch the Advanced Startup Options because the system is booting up so fast. If you can get to the Advanced Startup Options ....boot up in Safe Mode. Then try a System Restore to a date prior to installing Avast. Also try a USB keyboard if you have one. Quirkie Posted November 27, 2014 Author Posted November 27, 2014 It's at a computer repair shop now. Apparently it's a bad virus! Some kind of weird virus that causes the keyboard not to work. It wouldn't work with a USB Keyboard either. The onscreen keyboard worked! I'll let you know for sure what the problem is when my brother gets it back next week! This way if others have this problem we'll know what to do Quirkie Quote
KenB Posted November 27, 2014 Posted November 27, 2014 If we knew that the on-screen keyboard was working we could have advised further with the virus removal. Let us know how you get on :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
Quirkie Posted December 4, 2014 Author Posted December 4, 2014 Hi, It turns out there was no virus. They removed stuff from the junk file and removed the weatherbug program and avast. The computer came with a windows defender so it's on! I have avast and weatherbug on mine and so far it's work ok. They did get the keyboard to work. Also the touch pad wasn't working either Quirkie Quote
KenB Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 It is not clear if you are running two Anti-Virus .... The computer came with a windows defender so it's on! I have avast and weatherbug on mine and so far it's work ok. In Win 8.1 Defender is an Anti-Virus software. So is Avast. You should only have one AV running on your system. You should turn off Defender if you are still using Avast. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Quirkie Posted December 8, 2014 Author Posted December 8, 2014 The avast and weatherbug have been uninstalled and the windows defender is on. I did the same with my laptop even though I wasn't having any problems with my keyboard Quirkie Quote
Quirkie Posted December 8, 2014 Author Posted December 8, 2014 Also the man at the repair shop said the weatherbug uses up resources on a computer! Not sure what he meant Quirkie Quote
Plastic Nev Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Hi Quirkie, indeed that weatherbug program is a very resource intensive one, from what I have seen it is running continuously, gathering weather data all the time, using up processor time and RAM space to quite a large degree if on one of the simpler low cost systems, that doesn't have such a great processor or large RAM in the first place.
