KenB Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 Hi Bob I have only a very brief outline as to what you have tried so far from Starbuck. I understand that you had malware on your system - but that has now been sorted. If you can - can you tell me some of the things you have tried so that we do not go over old ground again ? Thanks. [ As I told you - I am away this afternoon for a few days. If I don't add to this by Monday please send me an email or PM :) ] NOTE TO OTHER MEMBERS - Please DO NOT add to this thread. I do not want to confuse the issue. This has been an on-going problem. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! bob12a Posted December 7, 2014 Author Posted December 7, 2014 Some items I have been trying over the last week Ken I am not getting anywhere Trying to update KB 946932,KB974821 also trying to work out what error 80004005 is. Also I do have now a recovery disc that came with the computer afraid to use it as I think it means I loose all on my comp. ============= You can see this person has had the same problems http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread.php/150073-Win-7-32-bit-update-to-SP1-(KB976932)-will-not-complete-configuring-quot-Failed http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html Quote Bob(bob12a)My 3D pictures need red cyan glasses to viewmedion MD8855,Win 7 IE8, Firefox/3, Avast,MS security essentials, NERO 9,malware bytes.Mailwasher pro ,6.54,Roboform,spybot S&D 1.6, Canon ixus 860 X 2,PS CS5
KenB Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Hi Bob We certainly do not want to go down the re-install route for this one. If it is a "Recovery Disk" there is no option to try a Repair Install .....which is a pity. Did you try a System File Check with Starbuck ? KenB Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Hi Bob Nev has reminded me of another option ...... Digital River. This is a legitimate Microsoft download site. It is possible to download Win 7 with SP1 on it and use this to upgrade your present installation. Your installed software etc would be left intact. The process is not without its problems and is a little complex. Take a look here - click here and here - click here This would solve your problem re SP1 but I would only suggest this if you were completely happy with the process and the risks. ========== Bob, Do you have your photos and files backed up to an external drive? I would suggest that this is the first thing you should do if we are taking this any further :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! bob12a Posted December 9, 2014 Author Posted December 9, 2014 Thanks I am studying this though I do think its beyond me. I am fairly certain I have back ups of photo and files is there a way I can be sure. I found this while lookin through digital river X17-58996.iso http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-58996.iso I have downloaded it (over an hour) but have not gone any further I believe I need to burn it to DVR(help) There is another answer I think why dont I just buy windows 8 Again thank for all your help. KenB Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 I believe I need to burn it to DVR(help) Hi Bob - yes you do need to burn it to DVD. You have downloaded a 32 bit image of Home Premium. Is this the exact same version of Win 7 that you have on your computer? [ This is important ] You should have the download file accessible in Downloads or possibly on the Desktop. Insert a DVD into the drive. Double click on the ISO icon from the download. It should be as simple as that. I suggest that if you are given the option to "Verify" then tick this box. ( This will check the burn and make sure it is OK ....you don't want a corrupt version of Win7 to work with :) ) Before we do anything else .... we need to make sure that you have a copy of all of your photos and any other files that you don't want to lose. Let me know how you get on burning the image. :) =========== Re. Win 8 I think you would get very frustrated with Win 8 ....it is very different from Win 7 Personally I prefer Win 7 ....I guess it is just what you get used to ( although I use Win 8.1 predominantly .... it is on this laptop :) ) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! bob12a Posted December 9, 2014 Author Posted December 9, 2014 Thanks Ken going for my afternoon nap can you help with this is there a way to check I am fairly certain Ido. KenB Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 Can you help with this is there a way to check I am fairly certain Ido. Before we do anything else .... we need to make sure that you have a copy of all of your photos and any other files that you don't want to lose. Hi Bob I am sure that you would know if you had copies of the photos that you store on the computer. This is normally done using a DVD / Memory Stick / External Hard Drive / Internet based Cloud ( or similar ) It is generally done manually - it can be automatic - but you would know in either case. If you are unsure if you have backups, then it would be a good idea - if you cannot afford to lose the photos ( and files ) - to make a copy of the data that you value. I am not suggesting that we are going to lose it .....this is just a precaution :) Do you have an external hard drive that you can use ? This is probably the best as it will hold more. You can use DVDs if you wish. ( or a large Memory Stick ) It is always best to have a copy of important files off the computer just in case of problems. KenB Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Hi Bob (would send a snip but send image wont allow me to) Don't worry Bob - email is fine :) The image that you sent me is here ( for reference ) - click here The content looks correct. I used an ISO of Win7 some time back and I have just compared the files on mine with yours - they are the same. So it looks as if we are good to go :) [ Make sure you label this DVD and keep it safe - it can be used to re-install the Operating System at some time in the future if necessary ] I am concerned about your photos. Can you please confirm that you do have a copy of these and the copies are NOT stored on the actual computer that we are working on ? Also - if you have documents on the computer that you don't want to lose please make a copy and store them on a DVD or Memory Stick. KenB Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Hi Bob Just as a precaution we now need to back-up the drivers off your system. Download "Double-Driver" from here: - click here Save it to your Desktop. There is a tutorial here - https://www.udemy.com/blog/backup-drivers-for-windows-7/ You will need to scroll down to "Method 2" I have just tried this .... I didn't get dd.exe next to the icon - I just got dd -.it works the same Double Driver selects what it thinks are the important drivers off your system. ( the ones that are checked ) Take a look down the list. Anything that looks important ( sound / video / chipset / dvd / wifi etc ) make sure they have a tick next to them. D-D will suggest a location to save these drivers to. We want them on a Memory Stick if you have one. If you are unsure how to do this ... write down the location that D-D is going to save your driver backup to so that we can find it later. ( I think it defaults to My Documents ) This is just a precaution - but it is good to have a backup of the drivers anyway :) Just ask if you have any questions. KenB Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 lets call it a day now Ken chat tomorrow No problem Bob. I will write what I need to - you reply when you are ready :) ======================= I have had a reply to my question. Basically you have the wrong version of the ISO to do a "Repair" with. I thought this may be the case - but had a vain hope that by using it we would upgrade to SP1 at the same time. I can now report that this is not the case. To do a "Repair Install" of Win7 with no SP1 installed you need a version of the Digital River Win 7 that has no SP1 too. You have burned a version of Win 7 that does have SP1 on it. This will still be useful - but only after we have SP1 on your system. Also this is a 32 bit download version ........Do you have a 32 bit Operating System ? Where do we go from here ? You need to download the ISO Win 7 Digital River version ( without SP1 ) Burn this to DVD as you did with the other. [ Make sure you clearly mark both DVDs "SP1" / "Without SP1" ] The Download for both 32 bit and 64 bit versions can be got from here - click here =================== I am sorry about the additional work Bob - but I am glad I asked the question. One more thing ..... There is no guarantee that a Repair Install will fix your problem. It is, however, the final stage before a full re-install. Do you wish to continue ? KenB Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 I will not want to do a re-install Yes - I was aware of this Bob this is why I wanted to try the "Repair Install" Just one or two other things that have come to mind : 1. How much free disk space do you have ? Right click on C: > Properties 2. Did you download SP1 as a file or did you try to use Automatic Updates to install it ? KenB Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Free 625 625 MB or 625 GB This could be the problem. If it is just 625 MB then the drive is nearly full.
