Sorry its 625 GB free

I thought it would be ( 1TB drive ) but I had to ask :)

Do you wish to try the "Repair install" ?

I don't think there are any more options open to us.

You may find that some settings ( desktop wallpaper for instance ) are changed after the "Repair" but your data and software should still be ok.

I can't give any guarantees with this Bob but if you want your system running properly I think it is the only option left open to us.

Do you have the ISO burned ( the one with no SP1 ) ?

I am not worried about settings I am sure I can replace these

Not yet will let you know doing it later also will print the 15 pages of instructions you asked me to do as well

I understand NO SP1 I also understand when we go ahead it is MY decision

?

Ken

I found this in my loft yesterday when I looked at it I thought it was just like the same we burned couple days ago.

Nev has shown me how to send screen shots without going all round the world

No - it isn't the same Bob.

It is a Recovery Disk.

If you use this is will put your system back to where it was when you first bought it and you will lose everything.

Let me know when you are ready to go ahead with the "Repair Install" :)

OK Bob ..... here we go :)

You will need your 25 character Product Key off the Microsoft sticker on the machine.

Do not start the process until you have located and copied this down.

If it is worn or you cannot locate it you can use Speccy to give you the Product Key.

It is important that you have this copied accurately.

Don't confuse zeros with the letter O

Please read through the printed sheets first ( from No 6 )

Boot up ....I assume that you have the Administrator Account on the machine ?

Disable any Anti-Virus or Firewall.

These could affect the "Repair"

Insert the ISO DVD [ Without SP1 ]

You now need to refer to No 6 - Repair Installed Windows 7 without SP1 using Windows 7 without SP1 DVD

This is on the printed sheets.

You can ignore No 4 and No 5

Follow the instructions from here.

In step 11 - please make sure that you select the "Upgrade" option.

The on-screen instructions will lead you through the process - refer to the printed sheets for confirmation.

This may take 45 mins to 1 hour.

Good luck :)

Hi Ken

Great all images now visible.

Problem What do I believe

25 character Product Key off the Microsoft sticker on the machine.

Belarc and Snippy show identical 25 product numbers the product Label on back of PC shows a different 25 key set of numbers.

Apart from printing out the 15 page instructions I will not do anything else until I hear from you

I have sent you an email Bob.

I would assume that the one on the Microsoft sticker is correct if you bought the machine new

and have not had a re-install or upgrade of the Operating System.

Thinking about it .... The big manufacturers when they are doing mass installations, use a generic Product Code which is acceptable to Microsoft

BUT it is unlikely that this generic code will be accepted for a re-install.

Stay with the one from the sticker. ( make a note of the Belarc generated one ....just in case :) )

Hi Bob

It looks as if, at this point. the process was looking for critical updates ....installed 4 but failed on SP1

Did the "Repair" continue after this or did it fail due to this ?

I assume that you still have the use of your computer ?

this fault is the one that I have had for years Ken

The repair did not continue I started from scratch 5 times following paper and screen instructions and it stops at

https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&ik=e36647bfcf&view=fimg&th=14a44da1934b1942&attid=0.1&disp=thd&realattid=1487398164913717248-local0&attbid=ANGjdJ_2HOCkfF7d_FED1LOoP0ez5d6ERJcFrh5RU-FxKAXIlFTbm_F2_9C7vkZdWOeXJeA129rxHGYY4ASRUe1KWvKOtD3OC_KkJ54PISL_1u2mALpT2BFnsZd11tM&sz=w360-h240-p-nu&ats=1418543656122&rm=14a44da1934b1942&zw

I close and look for updates as instructed and get the failure as #36 above after about an hour.

I still have use of my computer

thanks again

This is, at least, a positive.

It looks as if we are back to square one Bob.

We can't install SP1 ..............and we can't run a Repair Install because we can't install SP1.

I think, after all you have tried so far, the only way forward now is to do a complete re-install.

I know you do not want to do this :)

I will take a look round some of the other forums and see if I can come up with anything else to try.

Hi Bob

The only conclusion we can come to now is that there is something on the system that is stopping SP1 from installing.

Rather obvious comment I know :)

It is very odd - especially as there are other incidences of it over the net.

I will not give up just yet .....if you are prepared to carry on a bit longer ?

Hi Bob

It is not a waste of my time .....it is a challenge :)

I have just asked Shawn ( tutorial author ) if he has any idea why you are getting the Compatibility Report re. SP1 when we don't have SP1 on the system or the ISO disk.

I will get back to you after he has replied.

He is bound to ask .... Are you absolutely sure that the ISO that you burned and used was the one without the SP1 on it ?

Hi Bob

I wasn't holding my breath with the last suggestion: :)

OK - please do the following:

Start > type in ......command prompt .....in the top left of screen right click on cmd.exe that appears and click on "Run as Administrator"

At the prompt type .... wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:976932 .................[ there is a colon after kb ]

If SP1 was partly installed at some point hopefully this will remove it.

If it doesn't exist you should get a message.

Let me know how you get on with this.

Hi Bob

That confirms it :)

OK - try this then please ...

Make sure that you have SP1 downloaded and you know where the file is when we come to try installing again.

===============

Start > All Progs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup

Please make sure that you tick ...Temp Internet Files / Temp Files / Recycle Bin

You can tick any of the others if you wish.

Click OK

=============

Download CCleaner from here - click here

You want the free version

Install it and run it.

Make sure that the Registry Cleaner option is not ticked ...you don't want to use this.

Delete anything that CCleaner comes up with.

==============

Download TFC from here - click here

Install and run it

It shouldn't find too much after the other two ....but delete what it does find.

==============

Download and run the System Update Readiness Tool from here - click here

Scroll down to where it says "Operating System .......Download Link"

You want the one from the top of the list .".x86-based (32-bit) versions of Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 7"

Scroll down a bit more to read the instructions.

================

I've copied the next bit to save typing .....

Rename the 'Software Distribution folder':

a) Click the Start Button, click 'All programs, and click on 'Accessories'.

b) Next Right click on the 'Command Prompt' option and then click 'Run as administrator'.

c) In the 'Command Prompt' window enter: net stop Wuauserv and press the 'Enter' key.

d) Next click the Start/Orb button in the taskbar, in the 'Search' box, enter: %windir% and press the 'Enter' key.

e) In Windows Explore view, search for and locate the folder named "SoftwareDistribution".

f) Right click on the folder and select the 'Rename' option and change the name to: SoftwareDistributionOld

g) Close Windows Explorer and in Command Prompt window enter: net start Wuauserv and press the 'Enter' key.

h) Wait for the "Windows Update Service has successfully" before exiting/closing the command prompt window.

i) If you open Windows Explorer you should see that new "SoftwareDistribution" folder has been created.

==================

Next perform a Clean Boot .....

Click here

You need to scroll down to the relevant Win7 bit

Click on the Win7 / Vista link.

=================

Disable the Anti-Virus and Firewall

=================

Once you are in a clean boot environment you need to try installing SP1 again from its location.

=================

Afterwards you need to Reset the Computer after a Clean Boot.

click here

Scroll down again

=================

Enable the A-V and Firewall again

=================

Hopefully ....... :)
