I thought you may have tried that. Sometime times things get so screwed up you have only one option left.

 

Before a reinstall though there are many data files that should be backed up to external media.

 

All pictures, movies, music, text files, pdf etc.

Bookmarks or favorites depending on your browser.

Contacts since this is Windows 7.

Calendars if they can be exported.

AppData folder if you have any games etc. where progress on games is saved.

And if you have any third party software you need to save any files from them like photoshop PSD.

 

The point is backup what is most important. Programs can't be backed up. They will need to be reinstalled.

 

I wish I had more to offer.

Thanks for the additional info.

 

Bob is reluctant to re-install as he has software on his system that he needs - but no way of re-installing that.

This is why we have persevered for so long.

It looks as if we have come to a dead end - and nowhere to go :)

Hi Ken.

I would like to know the software and version Bob is so worried about losing.Maybe we can sourse what he doesn't wan't to lose.

Just about any software can be replaced with another that does the same job.

There comes a time when Bob has to bite the bullet if there is no other alternative.

I think you haved reached that point.

Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.

Before we finish ...

 

Just check that you have your A-V and Firewall turned on.

[ I know we had these on and off a few times ]

 

I suggest that you create a Restore Point - assuming that the system is running normally.

Start > right click "Computer" > Properties

Left side ......click on "System protection" > Create

Give it a name > Click "Create"

 

Now that you have Bob2 as a user .....

I suggest that you log on as Bob2 and backup the registry onto the Desktop as you did with your main account.

 

Start > type in .....regedit .....ENTER

Click on File > Export

In the "Save In" box ...select the Desktop as the location

Give it a name [ regbackup ] and click "Save"

 

You will now have a backup on the Desktop of both accounts ............. just in case :)

Thanks DSTM I will not be reninstalling any progs happy with what I have. Will work without sp1 rather than do that.

This will give you the path defined by %systemroot%

I was trying out the disk we burned WITH SP1 ON just to see if I could get any where got as far as being asked to in put product key (25 charters) no problems entering it but but ended up with the message I sent you for info.

 

Now trying to see if Medion will help not easy to find the right addi waiting for a reply from Medion unofficial forum.

I assume that the Product Code you used was the one from the sticker on the case ?

It goes without saying that it needs to be typed in correctly. Zero and letter "O" are a known problem.

 

It could be that the repair was looking for installed SP1 and didn't find it.

The original tutorial stated that it had to be like-for-like.

 

By the way - Micro-soft have removed this option now.

If you wanted to download a Win-7 Home ISO it looks as if you would have to pay for it !!

It is worth a try.

Run the FixIt then try installing SP1 from your desktop file.

Hi Bob, as usual with forums such as this, we don't actually close a thread or delete it as the information in it may be useful for someone else.

All we do is mark a thread as solved when the problem has been solved. In this case we can't even do that unfortunately.

Also, at some time in the future, someone may find and post an answer that does work, so it will be left alone now, as a just in case.

We have tried a "Repair Install" using a Disk that Bob has [ this didn't come with the machine ] and also with an ISO that we downloaded from Digital River.

 

It may be worth a try.

 

Would you like to guide Bob through the process as it is your idea ?

Hi Bob

I will be happy to walk you through this , a couple of questions though.

 

1, Just incase are you 100% certain your pictures etc are backed up ?

 

2, Doing this will retain all your data in the C:/ users folder , so for example C;/users/bob/pictures will be safe.

 

Right on to running the recovery itself , firstly make sure usb sticks and drives etc are unplugged before commencing , then follow this set of instructions

  • Switch on the PC.

  • Press the corresponding key when you see the message "Press F11 to run recovery" or "Press F12 to run recovery".

  • After a few seconds, the message "Windows is loading files" will appear. Wait until the files are loaded. The "Power Recover" menu will then appear.

  • Select the language of the restoration menu.

  • Click on "Next".

  • You may now choose between two forms of restoration:

  • Restore to HDD – no backup of user data

  • All data on the PC are irretrievably erased, restoring delivery condition.

  • Restore to HDD – with backed up user data
    (This is the one you need
    )

    Delivery condition is restored and all user data under C:\User are preserved.

  • Warning!

  • When using the option with backed up user data, the restoration procedure takes a long time. Data are only preserved if they are located in the C:\user folder.

Click on Next and follow the further instructions, which will appear on the screen, to restore the Computer .
