I would like to go over some old ground again if you don't mind ?

 

Run the sfc /scannow tool again please from an elevated command prompt.

Start > type in ....cmd ....right click on cmd.exe that appears top left > Run as Admiistrator

 

Run chkdsk again - again from an elevated command prompt.

At the prompt type in ........ chkdsk C: /f /r

This is a little different from last time.

If you remember this takes a time to run through and you will be prompted to restart the machine before the check can be run.

It may be best to do this over-night.

 

Reboot and go into Safe Mode. [ tap F8 about once per second ]

 

Now try SP1 again from the Desktop.

This is the only hardware that is showing as "not compatible" but I cannot see it affecting a software installation.

I suggested that you would need to restart the machine in my post.

 

you will be prompted to restart the machine before the check can be run.

Just click "Yes" - restart the machine and the scan will continue.

It will take a long time ..... overnight ?

Create a new user account with Admin Privileges. Call it Bob2 or something that identifies it.

Once the account is created re-boot the machine and log in with this account.

[ Copy and paste SP1 first ....see below ]

 

You need to try installing SP1 using this new account.

I doubt that SP1 will be showing on the new Desktop. So ....before you try the new account ...

 

Using your original account - Right click on SP1 on the desktop > click on Copy

Now go to Start > Computer > C: > Users > Public > Public Downloads

Right click on the space > Paste

SP1 should now be available in Public Downloads.

 

Boot up using the new account.

Go to Start > Computer > C: > Users > Public > Public Downloads and click on SP1 to try the install from here.

It involves re-setting the Registry to default permissions.

 

You have an image created of your hard-drive and this will be our fall-back if anything goes wrong. :)

 

First thing to do is to back-up the registry.

Start > type in ....regedit ....ENTER

Click on File > Export.

Make sure you put a check mark against "All" [ bottom left corner ]

Name the file RegistryBackup

And select Desktop as the location.

Click on "Save"

5. Confirm that you have the bat file by ............... right click on it on the Desktop > Edit

It should have the text that you copied above there - 8 lines.

 

Can you confirm when you have got this far please ?

If it doesn't ....and it says "Text" .....do the following:

 

Right click on the file > Edit

Click on File > Save As

Make sure where it says "Save as Type" ...... "All Files" is showing and not "Text"

 

Now make sure it says against File Name ...registryfix.bat ... [ you will have to add the ,bat again ]

 

Click on "Save"

 

You may be prompted that the file already exists ...... overwrite this.

 

Check on the Desktop that "Properties" shows it as a .bat file and not text.

Right click on the registryfix file > Copy

 

Now click on C: > Program Files > Windows Resource Kits > Tools [ you need to click on Tools to open it ]

Right click on the open Tools folder > Paste

[ this should paste in registryfix ]

 

Now use the back arrow ( top left ) and go back to the Tools Folder.

You can open it again to check that the file is there.

 

Now point the screen curser to the Tools Folder to highlight it.

Hold the SHIFT key down and right click with the mouse.

Click on Open a Command Window from Here

[ATTACH=CONFIG]1388.vB5-legacyid=2453[/ATTACH]

 

You should now see C:\Program Files \ Windows Resource Kits \ Tools >

 

Now type in ...registryfix.bat

It should look like this ..... C:\Program Files \ Windows Resource Kits \ Tools > registryfix.bat

If it does ......... hit ENTER

It should then run the .bat file and reset the Registry Permissions.

 

Fingers crossed all will be OK.

You are advised to make sure that you have an image or clone of your hard-drive before attempting this process.

If so ....let's do it from an elevated command prompt.

 

Start > type in ......cmd ...[ don't hit Enter ] right click on ....cmd.exe ...that appears left side of screen

Click on "Run as Administrator"

 

At the prompt type in ....CD C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\registryfix.bat ................... [ there is a space after CD then no gaps ]

The directory name is invalid.

I tried this on my Win 8 before I posted and it seemed OK

I will try this on my Win 7 machine.

I have just tried this on my Win7 machine ....and all seems to be OK.

 

I will get back to you on this one.

Obviously something is not right.

 

THERE ARE AT LEAST 10 CMD'S NO CMD.EXE

I don't understand this at all Bob.

I will test it out on my Win7 machine too.

I have tested this on my Win7 machine ....... I only get one cmd ...it doesn't show cmd.exe ...but I get only one.

Right click on this > Run as Administartor get me to an elevated command prompt with "Administrator" in the top left corner.

There may well be other options listed ....but there should be only 1 CMD.

If you can get to an elevated command prompt [ Administrator in the top left corner ] try the following:

 

You will probably see this ...... C:\Windows\System32 .....

I want to try the path that we wrote out a bit at a time to see what part it doesn't like

 

So ... at the prompt type in ..... CD C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools ......now hit Enter.

Remember there is a space after CD ....then no spaces at all. ....Sorry ...other than between Program and Files and Windows - Resource - Kits

Does it take you to the "Tools" folder without error ?

It should show the path with a flashing curser .....no error messages.
