Hi Bob

New log with today 13.34 attempted to install SP1

Failed at 14.56 with error code 80004005

Are you saying that you started the SP1 install and after over an hour of going through the process - it failed ?

Was it just hanging - or could you see activity ...the progress bar for instance.

This seems to be a long time before failing.

==================

Let's try something else:

Stop the Windows Update Service

Start > type in cmd > right click on cmd.exe that appears top left of screen.

Now click on "Run as Administrator"

At the command prompt type in .......net stop wuauserv .......hit ENTER [ space between each word ]

This stops the Updater Service.

Now delete the temporary Update Files

Then Start > Computer > double click on C:\

Then double click on Windows > Software Distribution > Data Store

Delete all of the files and folders here in Data Store.

Now click on the arrow to go back to "Software Distribution"

Double click on Download

Delete all of the files / folders in the "Download" folder.

Now try installing SP1 again from the file on your Desktop.

If it succeeds or fails you will need to go back to an elevated command prompt and type in .......net start wuauserv ......hit ENTER

This will start the Update Service again.

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

We should have turned the Windows Update Service off - [ net stop wuauserv ]

I don't understand how.you got 10 updates

When you did this - did you get confirmation that the service had been stopped ?

I wanted to try installing SP1 from the downloaded file on your Desktop without the updates kicking in.

I seem to have lot of duplicates on my comp is there a safe way to remove them

The problem with duplicate files is - some of them may actually be needed.

Take a look here - click here

This gets a bit confusing in the reading ....but the gist is some of them may be needed.

You can identify them with CCleaner - but deciding what to remove and what to leave could be a headache.

My suggestion - leave them.

I doubt that they will be taking up too much space - and they certainly will not be slowing your system down.

YES CONFIRMED after the complete start from scratch at 1515

I wanted to try installing SP1 from the downloaded file on your Desktop without the updates kicking in.

I now understand what we should have done

1531 after net stop wuauserv

click sp1 on my desktop

1533 install

1633 still installing info 28% green progress bar about half way across

1636 green progress bar still moving info 28% green progress bar about 3/4 across

1648 screen changes to installation not successful error 80004005

Back where we started

I HAVE TRIED TO REMOVE EONENERGYFIT I AM SURE IT IS SOMETHING TO DO WITH EON.

That does seem to be a common factor ....just that the times are slightly out.

Let's see if we can get rid of the EON software.

Do you have Revo Uninstaller ?

If not - get it from here - click here

You will need to scroll down for the FREE option.

Install it and run it.

It will show all installed software - EON should be there.

Click on it to highlight.

In the toolbar at the top select "Uninstall"

Then select "Advanced" [ Moderate is the default ]

You will be prompted to OK the registry entries.

I have never had a problem with this - so have a quick look through ....it should be OK to remove all.

Let's hope that this does it :)

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

And to you Bob :)

I don't suppose EnergyFit is showing up in Programs and Features is it ?

You may have had it on your system at one time and removed it - it could have left remnants behind.

Try installing the software again then use Revo Uninstaller to remove the lot.

I have looked for a download with no luck ....It seems that the software came on a CD with the monitoring hardware.

Do you have this ?

Hi Bob

I don't think there is a need to buy the Pro version of Revo .........unless you particularly want it that is :)

I will have another look for the EON software.

EDIT:

found this on the E-ON site

Windows 7: Go to “Start” > “Control Panel” and look for “Uninstall a program”. In this list should be the Energy Fit software. Double click the icon to go through the uninstall procedure. For further information check the README file located on the CD you received with the monitor.

If it isn't showing then it must be remnants causing the problem.

We need to re-install and remove with Revo.

That's true Bob - it is a very common problem ......with very few answers.

I will see if I can find that E-ON software ...it must be on the net somewhere.

I don't understand why I can't find it on the E-ON site ????

I found a bit more info:

Do you have SQL Server Express on your system?

[ Revo should show this ]

Do Not uninstall it yet please.

Hi Bob

Thanks for the photo showing SQL Server on your system.

This utilises a database and can be removed.

Your pic shows 6 instances of SQL - the earliest being 12 November 2014.

This doesn't go back as far as your original problem but it is showing up in the error reports connected with EON.

As you can't locate any instances of EON on your system let's remove SQL Server ( all 6 )

If it is needed by another piece of software it is easy enough to install again.

Once you remove SQL Server - ---

Disable A-Virus

Disable Firewall

Disable UAC - click here

try the Desktop SP1 file again.

If this doesn't work - try the Desktop SP1 file from Safe Mode.

Don't forget to turn your AV / Firewall and UAC back on after you have tried to install SP1

=============

I am sure you said earlier that you tried to remove .net framework ...........did you do this ?

Some installations need this to run properly.

I read so much about this problem yesterday I cant believe NO ONE has found an answer anywhere except reinstall from scratch I wont do that. With the many instances asked to Microsoft it seems MS is just ignoring it. Some questions date to only a few months ago I would accept reluctantly if this was not still around.

I would like to pen a note to microsoft but would not know what question to ask.

I have ver 6.1 (build 7600) with NO SP1

there seems to be a version (7601)as well.

All the best Ken I would understand if you wanted to call this problem a day.

I would understand if you wanted to call this problem a day.

I'll stick with it as long as you want to Bob - there is one consolation ......you will get the prize for the longest running thread :)

I assume that the installation failed at the same point each time ?

I would like to pen a note to microsoft

I may do this anyway ....but I doubt that there would be any answers

Try running sfc /scannow from Safe Mode.

Once booted up in Safe Mode ......Start ....type in cmd .......right click on cmd.exe that will appear top left of screen

Click on "Run as Administrator"

At the command prompt type in ........ sfc /scannow .......ENTER [ space after sfc ]

Then, still in Safe Mode ...try the SP1 install again.

Let me know the time that you started the install please.

If it fails run the MiniToolbox scan immediately and lets see what it throws up.

WILL HAVE A GO AT YOUR REQUEST LATER

I found this if it any use found on ms forums

===================================

Maybe this solution can help:

"NOTHING worked for me, until I found this nifty little solution. Here it is ; )

1) download SubInAcl at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=E8BA3E56-D8FE-4A91-93CF-ED6985E3927B&displaylang=en

2) Go to C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools (you can paste this into your browser to go there) and create a notepad file called reset. Paste this into the file:

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f

subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f

3) save the file as reset.cmd Remember to change the file type to "all files" and not just "Text"

4) a reset command should show up, run it.

After you let the command finish running, the 0x80004005 error should be taken care of."

Meanwhile - the SP1 file on the desktop .....if you right click on this ... is there an option to "Run as Administrator" ?

If there is ....give this a try :)

Thanks for the link Bob.

I have had a quick read through.

We have tried some / most of the suggestions ( and more :) )

A lot of what was discussed in the thread revolved around registry changes related to "Windows Mail"

This would not relate to you unless you have enabled Windows Mail in the past with WinMailEdit.reg

Have you done this ? [ I am sure you would know if you had :) ]

I assume that you DO have an A-Virus on your system as a replacement ?

I can check if you tell me how.

If Windows Mail is enabled on your system it should show if you ...

Start > All Programs > Windows Mail

Left yourself wide open :)

If you don't want MS Essentials then I will ask Pete for his opinion of the best free options.

Try not to use the internet until we get an AV on your system.

Hi Bob

You had 2 A-vs on your system before you removed MS Essentials.

I assume that MS-E was disabled at the time ?

Either way ....you have only one now :)

If MS-E was not disabled .....you would have had 2 AVs scanning in real time.

I wonder if this was causing the problem with SP1 ?

Try disabling Nod32 and have a go at the Desktop SP1 again.

No harm in trying :)
