You have confirmed that it is on your system ( email ) since 2011

The reason I asked was the author of the article linked to wrote ...

After spending a lot of time I finally narrowed the problem down to one particular update, KB 2620704.

He couldn't get this to install.

He also said that he tried The Update Readiness Tool

Windows Update offered me a new update called System Update Readiness Tool

We have tried this too.

One useful piece of information - the System Readiness Tool produces a log.

Take a look here please and see if a log exists:

C:\ > Windows > logs > cbs > checksur.log

If it is there it should be able to open with Notepad.

Post it here please.

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

It was worth a try Bob :)

OK - try this:

Start > type in ......services.msc ......ENTER

Scroll down and find "Windows Update" > right click on it > Stop

Navigate to ....

C > Windows > SoftwareDistribution

Right click on "Software Distribution" > Rename

Make it SoftwareDistribitionOld

Now disable Nod32 and your Firewall.

Go to the SP1 file on the Desktop and try installing SP1 from there.

===============

You must now go back to C > Windows > SoftwareDistributionOld and right click on it > Rename

Change this back to SoftwareDistribution

Now Start > type in ....services/msc ...ENTER

Go back to "Windows Update" .....right click on it .....Start.

====================

How did you get on ?

If SP1 failed ...was it at the same point ?

got as far as stop then got error 1053

Did this error pop up straight away ....or was it after 30 seconds or so ?

Please try stopping the Windows Update service again.

If you get the same error we can make a change to the Registry ..............if you are happy to do this?

It could be that the request "timed out" ....in other words the service is given a time period by Windows in which to respond.

If it has not responded in this time period then you would get this error.

Usually the time period is 30 seconds - which should be ample time.

Do this for me please... ( if you are happy changing the registry )

Start > type in .....regedit .....ENTER

Click the > next to each of the following ..... HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Control

Now right click in the blank space on the right side > New > DWORD ...........it may say DWORD 32bit

The Name box will be highlighted ...type in ServicesPipeTimeout ..then click out of the box

Now right click on "ServicesPipeTimeout" > click on "Modify"

Put a check against "Decimal" ......the default will be "Hexadecimal"

Now type in 180000 ........ that is 18 and 4 zeros ..... and click OK.

This now changes the default from 30 seconds to 180 seconds.

You need to restart for the changes to take effect.

If you are unsure about anything then please ask.

Do not make changes to anything else.

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

15000 NOW CHANGED TO 180000

Odd - this is 15 seconds

The default is 30 seconds ......this must have been changed in the past.

Did you alter the 15000 by right clicking on the existing ServicesPipeTimeout and Modify the 15000 to 180000 ?

SAME ERROR

Mmmm ....I can't say I am surprised.

I have not forgotten you Bob - I have been busy these last few days.

Can you see if you can navigate to this please: [ I am on Win 8.1 atm ]

C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools

I am looking at post #115 and the registry fix.

I will need to check this out a bit further for you before we try it.

I suspect that SubInAcl will need to be installed first.

If "Windows Resource Kits" is not there download and install SubinAcl from here - click here

This says that it is for XP .... but I hope it will be OK.

I have seen some with Win7 say that it does not work for them ....and others it does.

[ Probably needs SP1 !! :) ]
