Hi, Please can someone advise how I check my WiFi is secure when using my PC please?

What prompted me to ask this was that when at a friends house my smartphone picked up several WiFi signals (some locked, some not) from the neighbours.

thanks

Hi

When you - or anybody else - first connects to your network ... do you ( they ) have to put in a network key ( password ) ?

[ once you have connected, Windows remembers the password so that you don't have to log in again ]

If you look on the router ... base / back or on top ..... does it give a password ?

[ do not post this here :) ]

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

That is perfectly normal.

The device will search for any wifi signal.

If its secured, you will need a password to access it.

The unsecured ( or Open ) ones are the ones that have no password protection.

A lot of shops now give free wifi and there's is normally unsecured.

Thanks All

Ken - yes, when I first logged on to WiFi I had to give my computer the password. I've update the operating system and it advised I would need to re-enter the password when the new system was installed but I didn't actually need to do this so wondered how it 'connected itself'. If it hadn't indocated it would need the password I wouldn't have even thought about it,

Hi

If you were upgrading the OS or repairing it ( not a full installation ) then Windows would probably remember the password.

You can check if there is a password set by going into the router software.

Open Internet Explorer and where you see http://www.******* at the top .....delete all of this then type in ..... 192.168.1.1 ...ENTER

This should get you to the router login.

The Login is probably ..... Admin

The password is probably Admin or password

Once inside .... look for "Wireless" or "General" [ all router software is different ] and see if you can locate the password.

It will be there somewhere.

If you cannot access the router software let me know the make and model number of your router.

If you had to input a password originally I suspect that this is still the case.

If your Login password is still Admin or password you may wish to change this.

If you do then make sure that you pick one that you will remember otherwise you will not be able to get back into the software again.

Entering 192.168.1.1 brings up many hits and despite looking at a few of these I can't find where I need to put any type of password unfortunately - grateful for further advice please?

Where did you put that address?

It should be in the address bar of your browser, granted this below is Firefox, but the red arrow shows where.

The password box may be different if your router is a different make, but that is all you should see.
