[ Solved ] Problem with .inp files

Hi to all,

I was checking my computer today and I found a file in my computer that is taking up 68.5 gigabytes in 110 files. They are .inp files ,all of them were modified on 11-20-2013.

 

I don’t know what they are ,I googled them but I cant find out if I should delete them or not .Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

These look like backup files ..............but in a strange location. "Documents"

Is this machine of yours a Dell ?

 

I have googled this and there is very little on the net ....as you are probably aware after trying this yourself :)

I agree they do look like some sort of backup file, but of what is not known. The little icon on the left of each file, is it PDF written in red and white in the icon? or something else?

I did have a look for the .INP file type here. (Worth copying to favourites Ken)

Even they don't have much info either, however as they suggest, try a double click on one of the files, if it was created by a program you already have, that program should open it, if not try opening the file in Notepad, amongst the code there may be some plain English that might give us a clue.

Thanks for the replies, yes it is a Dell I opened one files with notepad and here is a little bit of it, it goes on and on with the same things .

I found reference to this file extension on a DELL ..... not that we are any the wiser.

 

Have you had ABAQUS software on your machine in the past ?

This uses a .inp extension.

 

Do you have an external hard drive that has enough space to accommodate the 68 GB data.

I was going to suggest moving the files there.

Yes I have a external hard drive to store it but I want to know if it is ok to delete the 68 gb .I cant open it and I think they may be temp files. I have never even heard of ABAQUS software lol.

If you have an external drive .... copy the folder containing the INP files to it. At least then you can return them to the original location ..... just in case some software decides they are needed.

 

Then delete the folder on the main hard-drive.

 

I don't think they are needed but better to be safe and have a copy.

If, after a reasonable period of time, you decide that the files are not needed at all - delete them from the external drive.

Please let us know if it was OK to delete them from the main drive as there is very little on the net related to this file extension. :)

Yes I copied them then pasted them to the external hard drive, then I deleted them from the computer, so far so good.

As I say ... I am sure that you will have no problems .... but at least you have the files to hand if one crops up :)
