The usual methods of getting into the BIOS are F10 / F2 / DEL keys.

You do this from the desktop.

Click on the date ( bottom right corner of screen ) > Change Date and Time Settings

 

If your date and time are not correct - or they change again after you correct them it is probably the CMOS battery that needs changing.

Hi Lois, can you please explain exactly what you want to do, and what is wrong.

 

From you first post I think you mean it will not boot into an operating system, can you confirm that please?

 

You explained that a tutor at college has confirmed that the hard drive itself is OK, however there may not be a working operating system on it, we don't know this as yet.
