I have recently posted on this forum under PC security and Virus problems and mentioned the shop technical who sold me my HP Envy All In One with Windows 8 although the vendor said it has Windows 8.1 He has told me that Free AV's were all rubbish and in any case to make money the AV company will eventually send me a virus so they can force me to buy the premium version and you all agreed with me that statement was ridiculous! ....He also says the BBC tell nothing buy lies so are you getting the same picture as me!! LOL

Anyway that's the background to my posting here.

He also said " don't allow updates there is no need they will cause problems " AND on checking my system indeed windows updates are turned off! I believe windows 8 has been very troublesome with lots of bugs or so I have heard is this true?. Could this be reason he turned updates off to avoid downloading bugs?

A lady I know has a new laptop Windows 8 and says she received a download which changed the laptop over to US settings and she lost a lot of her data! This sounds more like a virus that a dodgy Windows download?

Anyway to cut to the chase a few questions

1.is getting Windows dowloads best or even vital or should I leave switched off?

2 I see that windows defender is turned off. Is it required if so how do I get it back?

3 He has set up my desktop with start menu similar to my old XP and I have all my icons on the desktop as was with my XP. However twice now I have managed t o change desktop to a load of Apps and with no obvious way of getting back to desktop and it has driven me mad trying to get back to' normal' Can someone please tell me how to get this sorted if it happens again as I still don’t know how i managed to recover the situation but i was up until 2AM with it!!!

4 This is off topic but as I no longer have a toolbar with 'view' on it how can I make the text larger as It's so small.

Looking foward to your help guys

Thanks Ray

Good grief Ray, I am tempted to tell you to take it back and demand a refund. The guy has no idea what he is talking about!

I can't help with resetting the desktop to how you want it as I have stayed well away from Windows 8. However I will say that the normal Windows updates should be turned on, those updates are there to address and block loopholes in the general security of the operating system. Without them you can be at risk of an attack from those who want to make money at your expense.

2 I see that windows defender is turned off

Windows Defender for Windows 8 is an antivirus and antispyware program. If you have a different AV installed they usually turn off Defender to avoid a conflict. Keep in mind that if you want to use Defender you have to manually enable it after uninstalling the other AV.

Normally clicking on the start button in Windows 8.1 will take you to the Apps page. If instead it brings up a traditional style start menu then a third party program was installed. There are several but Classic Shell is one. Desktop icons are probably just shortcuts so they can be added for almost anything.

Normally clicking on the start button in Windows 8.1 will take you to the Apps page. One way to get back to the desktop is to use the Esc/Escape key.

Press the Alt key and it will appear temporarily. This will work for Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.

To permanently add the menu bar in Internet Explorer right click on your toolbar then click Menu bar.

I don't see a way to permanently add the menu in Windows Explorer.

Hi Ray

You may find this useful - Win 8 tips - I wrote it some time back :)

Also - if you are on the Apps page ...Windows Key + D will take you back to the Desktop.

Windows Key + S gives you the Search Box

Windows Key + R gives you the Run Box

There are other combinations ..... experiment.

Windows Defender [ Win 8 ] is, in essence, Microsoft Security Essentials [ an AV ] with extras.

As Randy says - this needs to be off if you are using another AV.

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!
