PEV Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Hi guys an certainly using this forum lately and thank goodness you are all there for me! Just getting used to Win 8 and have negotiated a few 'hurdles' -- I am now receiving messages saying I am going to get 8.1 shortly and it tells me how good 8.1 will be but as I'm fine with win 8 why should I risk further complication? Anyway the message has option 'remind me later' which I have chosen but what do you suggest and if it's better to keep to 8 how do I stop the message keeping appearing? Thanks Ray Quote
Matthew1 Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Hi. No you don't. However, I would recommend it as it adds a lot more features to Windows. Regards Matt Matt Gazzard: Retired Microsoft IT Technician Quote
KenB Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Hi Matt - welcome to ExTS :) Hi Ray, I resisted upgrading to 8.1 for ages as there seemed to be a lot of problems across the net after doing so. However, MS seems to have ironed out the bugs and upgrading is now less of a problem. If you do decide to upgrade - there is no going back. You could create an image ( using Nev's tutorial ) and if there were any problems or you decide that you don't like 8.1 you could use this. To be honest - you will not see any great difference between 8 and 8.1 Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! PEV Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 Thanks Ken so if I wannt to stick with Win 8 then I just have to keep on clicking on 'remind me later' or is there a way to get rid of the message? Quote
KenB Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 is there a way to get rid of the message? There is Ray ..... click here [ Easier to give you a link than type it out ] Some versions of Win8 may not let you use the gpedit option. Win 8 support finishes Jan 2018 ....some time off yet. You can always update to 8.1 later if you wish. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! PEV Posted January 28, 2015 Author Posted January 28, 2015 Erk I dont like fiddling with things that aint broke! it looks like I'd best just keep clicking on 'remind me later' and wait till support for Win 8 ends in Jan 2018 then I will allow the download does that sound reasonable Ken? Thanks Ray Quote
KenB Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 does that sound reasonable Ken? I can understand why you don't wish to make changes to the Registry. If you are happy doing this - no problem. PEV Posted January 30, 2015 Author Posted January 30, 2015 Hi Ken and WARNING anyone else wishing to avoid forced upgrade to Windows 8.1 if you use link provided How to Stop Automatic Forced Upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1? You will automatically have Win 8.1forced installed! I uninstalled up date KB 3008273 as directed as it is allegedly a precourser to the forced up date but my machine then spent approx 90 minutes downloading win 8.1 I don't know if this is a malicious link or someone is having a laugh! But will now be doing a full PC scan Ray Quote
KenB Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Hi Ray You will automatically have Win 8.1forced installed! This sounds as if you had Automatic Updates enabled still. Did you get the option of selecting them for download after "Choose your Windows Update Setting" was changed ? PEV Posted January 30, 2015 Author Posted January 30, 2015 Hi Ken I think you're right must have been on auto update! But really weird that it all happened straight after I un installed the update the link told me to get rid of! Oh and not sure if it’s appropriate here but I’m finding I can’t remove browsing history - temp internet files and downloaded stuff any more from internet options as I used to be able to do when had my old machine with XP. I just go through the usual procedure, checking the stuff I want deleted but it just stays even though the indicator bar shows it's deleting? And there is still no spell check on this forum for me although I have been told it there I can't find it so I have to copy all my posts onto Office spell check them there and paste back to forum which is a bit of a pain! KenB Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 and there is still no spell check on this forum for me I asked in the other thread ...which browser are you using Ray ? If we know - we may be able to find out if there is an option to enable spell check. PEV Posted January 31, 2015 Author Posted January 31, 2015 Thanks Ken I have sorted it out with yur help Ray Quote
PEV Posted January 31, 2015 Author Posted January 31, 2015 Oh dear! I thought I had sorted it. I deliberately miss spelt to word in previous post to try it out but it didn't work Ray Quote
KenB Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Hi Ray I don't know if you tried this ... Right-click a text field - say the reply box here Select Spell-checker options Uncheck "Check the spelling text fields" - OR if it isn't checked ...put a check in the box. If you unchecked it shut Chrome down - then open it again. If the "Check the spelling text fields" is not checked ...change this. > Shut down Chrome and Open it up again. Ray1000 Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Oh dear! I thought I had sorted it. I deliberately miss spelt to word in previous post to try it out but it didn't work. You'll know this already Ray but ... You will see in advance of clicking the submit button if the spell checker is working as all wrongly spelt words are underlined in red and need manually rectifying. (With the help of the pop up box) Ray Quote
PEV Posted January 31, 2015 Author Posted January 31, 2015 Hi Ray I managed to set up so that spelling errors are indicated by red underline but am at a loss to find the 'pop up box' which I presume I use to find correct spelling? I hope so because just underlining my spelling mistake won't help if i'm not able to get the correct spelling Ray Quote
Plastic Nev Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Hi Ray, you right click on the misspelled word to see the box and the correct speeling, usually along with other words of similar start letters but different meanings., you just click on the one you want it to mean and it then puts in the correct word. Though sometimes you do get all the wrong ones. A case in point, as you can see I deliberately spelled "spelling" incorrectly, the choices I got were "Peeling, sleeping, steeling", and a few others, yet not one correction of the word spelling. So sometimes you do have to look elsewhere for what you really want, the system isn't infallible. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. Ray1000 Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 Just to continue from Nev's solution Ray ... When the correct word doesn't arrive in the pop up box ... left click on a blank space in the text field and the box will disappear ... change the word slightly and try again. It needs to get off to a good start. There are occasions when properly spelt, or should that be spelled, words will still have the red underline because the word isn't in the spell checkers dictionary. I don't think I could put isn't or wasn't in eBay messages for instance without it being underlined. Ray Quote
Ray1000 Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 Would it be worth separating the spell check element from this thread and giving it an appropriate title for future searches or is there too much work involved? Ray Quote
PEV Posted February 1, 2015 Author Posted February 1, 2015 Ken Ray 1000 Plastic Nev I am now conversant with the spell check thanks for all your help.Much appreciated Ray Quote
