[Solved] Desktop wont start! please help asap

Basically my desktop wont start, it worked last night but today i turned it on and it stays on gigabytes loading screen. Sometimes it says its automatically repairing and then just goes to a black screen but it mostly just stays at the motherboard loading screen.

 

Specs:

 

Gigabytes z97x g7

i5 4690k

8gb Ram

120gb ssd + 1tb hdd

evga gtx 960

600w psu

 

Any help is appreciated as i have my final project due tomorrow.

Please confirm that this is Win 8

 

Do you have a Win 8 full installation CD ? [ not recovery disks ]

 

I assume from your info that this is a desktop machine ?

Yes i am using windows 8 and i do have the cd.

Win 8 is awkward to get into Safe Mode ....which is what I would like to try.

The problem is it boots up far quicker than Win 7 and other OS.

 

Try this:

If you can get as far as the Login screen .... hold SHIFT down and click on Restart

 

If you can't get this far try holding the SHIFT key down and tapping F8 about once per second --- you have to be quick doing this.

It depends on the BIOS if this will work or not.

You may have to try this a few times.

 

If you can get into the Advanced Startup options try Last Known Good Configuration ...... or Safe Mode [ in that order ]

Tried all of this and nothing works, the bios screen comes up and thats all, ive tried to do a fresh install but my ssd isnt recognised, my other drives are though. Ive also tried to connect it via usb to my laptop but still it wont work. Maybe its my ssd that has been corrupted?

Try disconnecting the other drives [ data cables from the m/board ] .... and move the SSD connection on the Motherboard to one where the other drives were connected.

At least you know that works.

 

Try booting up again.

Hi, I just tried that and it still gives the same problem, and yes i tried to connect the ssd via usb but it crashes my laptop eventually as i cant even right click the drive.

This doesn't sound good.

 

What happens before the crash?

Does the laptop restart or just freeze ?

 

If the SSD is causing this there could be a short in it's circuitry.

Basically as soon as i try to open/right click the ssd in my computer, it freezes and closes the window and then completely closes windows explorer and then doesnt allow me to do anything so im forced to shut down. So my laptop freezes until i shut it down. But its perfect without the ssd connected.

Sorry to say, and I think Ken will agree with me it is looking like your SSD drive has died, and quite badly at that too.

Hi, what make was it, and if only a few weeks old you should still be covered by warranty and either get it replaced or your money back.

 

I am hearing some good feedback about Crucial SSD drives and do have one myself, this one which I bought about six months back.

Also looks like the price has gone down too as I am sure I paid a bit more than that for mine.

 

One thing of note, did you turn off the Windows 7 automatic defragmenter when you first fitted it?

SSD's shouldn't be defragmented on the regular basis that the automatic system does as it does tend to over use the read/write cycles, the number of which is what eventually kills SSD drives, it is in large numbers they are guaranteed for, but why over cycle a drive when there is no need too. SSD drives work in an entirely different manner and don't finish up with large amounts of fragmented files so they don't require defragmenting on a regular basis, only when things start to slow down and in general giving trouble.

It was a 120gb hyperx fury, i ordered it around 2 months ago from an amazon deal but only used it 2 weeks ago.

 

Also i was using windows 8 but im not sure if it has an automatic defragmenter.

Win 8 does have an auto defrag setting ....and this is usually "On" by default.

However - 2 weeks is hardly any time at all so this would not kill your drive I don't think.

 

I would return it for a refund / exchange.

 

If asked you can always say that "Auto-Defrag" was turned off.

I doubt that this is the cause of your drive failing anyway.

 

I am sure that the software is intelligent enough to realise that the drive is SSD and not defrag it anyway.

I would need to check this.

So i went to my local computer technician to gt my ssd tested just incase i did something wrong, and the same thing happened there where it would show up as something but then totally fail. He said that its dead and that i should send it back. Im currently reinstalling windows on a new ssd hoping the same thing doesnt occur x_x

Hi,

once it's up and running, check that the defragmenter is turned off. I don't have Windows 8 so it may be a different way to get to than it is in Windows 7, if needed please ask as one of us will know.

If it is an SSD then it will not affect it if you have auto-defragmentation turned off.

It is better for the drive.
