bobbyjimmy Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 Hi to everyone, this is my first post, thanks in advance for any help you can give. My PC powers up, the lights come on, and both my CD and DVD drives open if you press the buttons. There is, however, no video output, the monitor just stays on standby. I have had the box open and have made sure that all the connections are secure and have also tried it on a different monitor with the same result. My Dad said to buy a new video card to see if it will give output, one of my mates said that can't be the issue because the motherboard would beep, but there are no beeps from the motherboard. What's the best thing to do? Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 Hello Bobby Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Have you got an onboard VGA socket that you can plug the monitor in to rather than the card? Quote
bobbyjimmy Posted February 19, 2008 Author Posted February 19, 2008 Thanks for your reply. Sorry not exactly sure what that means? Quote
maynardvdm Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 Hi It means if the motherboard has got an on-board graphics card or do you have an graphics cards that "plugs" into a slot on the motherboard? If you have both you can disable the "plugged-in" grapics card and try the onboard graphics to see if it works. Cheers Quote We are all members helping other members. bobbyjimmy Posted February 19, 2008 Author Posted February 19, 2008 Yes it's an onboard VGA socket that's it plugged into I only have the graphics card that's on the motherboard, I haven't bought another one yet. Quote
maynardvdm Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 You said you checked hat everything is on and plugged in and there is no beebs! Normally when the video cards is'nt working there will be some beebs. Mmmm....I'll just think about this and get back to you. Quote We are all members helping other members. Guest Wolfeymole Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 Then either the power supply unit is faulty or the motherboard is. Have you definitely made sure that all hardware, memory etc are tightly seated? Have you tried a known working monitor on this pc? Quote
bobbyjimmy Posted February 19, 2008 Author Posted February 19, 2008 Yeah I had it open at the weekend, and push everything in nice and tightly but no luck. I've seen people say to take the memory out or turn off the motherboard's battery, will either of these things help? Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 Well you can try Bobby but make sure that everything is securely seated. Quote
bobbyjimmy Posted February 19, 2008 Author Posted February 19, 2008 Any other ideas? Everything is definitely tightly seated Quote

maynardvdm Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 Does the POST give one beep, this means that the POST did not find any errors? When you turn on the PC after a few seconds is there one beep? He said in the 1st post he tried another monitor :D Quote We are all members helping other members. bobbyjimmy Posted February 19, 2008 Author Posted February 19, 2008 Yes I've tried a known working monitor, I took the unit to my Dad's and tried it on 2 different monitors. No there's no beeps at all Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 I am most certain the motherboard has died Bobby, the optical drives may open ok as they have direct power from the psu. Quote
maynardvdm Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 I am also thinking it is the motherboard. Could be shorting against the case(Wolfey is this a possibility?) Guest Wolfeymole Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 Well unless Bobby has had the board out of the casing and perhaps damaged a case mount then I doubt it Maynard. One last question Bobby, have you taken the cpu out of it's socket? We might have a bent pin scenario here. Quote
bobbyjimmy Posted February 19, 2008 Author Posted February 19, 2008 I've just popped home in my lunch break and taken the memory out and I got 5 beeps when I turned the pc on. Does this eliminate a motherboard issue? Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 Well Bobby depending on your bios it could be a bad cpu or as I say a bad board. Look here http://www.amptron.com/html/bios.beepcodes.html You did reseat the memory yes? Quote
bobbyjimmy Posted February 19, 2008 Author Posted February 19, 2008 Yeah, I di reseat the memory. I have 2 memory slots, one with 512mb and one with 256mb. I took both of them out and then put them in one at a time as well. I haven't had the CPU out at all, is that the next step? Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 Ok so the memory is seated ok and you have rebooted, do you still get the 5 beeps? Is the cpu heatsink fan working ok? Quote
bobbyjimmy Posted February 19, 2008 Author Posted February 19, 2008 No, not once the memory was put back in Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 Ok we have tried a known working monitor, checked all hardware is secure and you say you have not removed the processor at all. If the cpu heatsink fan is working ok then it is my opinion that the board has died Bobby. I would consider popping back later as other tech members will be online then and may have different ideas. Quote
bobbyjimmy Posted February 19, 2008 Author Posted February 19, 2008 How would I know if the cpu heatsink fan is working ok? There's deinitely a fan going round Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 It may well be that there is enough power to run the fan if it's wired from the board. Is the fan running on the back of the power supply unit? Quote
