PEV Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 I am running windows 8.1 which was forced downloaded from windows 8 against my wishes! Anyway I have 8.1 now and it is working fine except that whatever setting I choose for receipt of updates they just get done with no consent or choice on my part which is REALLY annoying! I have the settings for updates to 'check for updates but let me decide whether to download or install them' This just doesn't happen though. For example I booted up the other morning and right across my desktop was a big strip message saying important updating will happen. My machine was then unusable for at least ten minutes (not sure how long as I gave up did other work) Is anyone else having this problem and any advice please? Ray Quote
DSTM Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 Hi Ray. You can schedule a time for the Windows updates so they aren't a nuisance Help here to configure. http://superuser.com/questions/695121/how-to-schedule-download-of-windows-8-1-updates Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
KenB Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 Hi Ray I have changed the Operating System in your Profile to " Windows 8.1 " If this isn't correct just let me know :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! PEV Posted February 9, 2015 Author Posted February 9, 2015 Hi DSTM Thanks for your help! Seems I'm best to ask for automatic updates which apparently are set at 3--0AM strange I had updates the other day around mid day but may be because I've been fiddling with update setting? Anyway we shall see! Ray Quote
Ray1000 Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 Ray, If you want to lessen the interruption you can choose a single day of the week for the automatic updates rather than every day ... Mine's set for Saturday at 3:00. Ray Quote

RandyL Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 The link in post #2 by DTSM explains that if your computer is asleep instead of turned off the system should wake at the proper time, If it is turned off at the scheduled time the updates should download the next time the computer boots up. Although I don't usually suggest this I prefer to not use auto-update. This of course means you have to be diligent about checking for updates manually. Specifically the second Tuesday of the month. mh2 Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 I agree with Randy! I've totally disabled Windows updates so I only update when I want. Once a month is good for me. http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/windows/3424920/how-stop-windows-8-installing-updates-automatically/ Quote Get help with computer problems.
