My mouse has been acting oddly and has not been getting any better.

Every 2 - 4 mins, my mouse becomes uncontrollable and whenever I move it, the pointer dashes all over the screen and drastically slows my computer down as well.

Can anyone help me solve this problem?

Hello TheSlee

Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help

What type of mouse is this, ie, Ball, Wired Optical, Wireless Optical, Touch Pad?

Posted

wireless ball, but I get the same problem with any mouse I use (I have wireless ball, wired ball, touch pad and wireless optical)

except with the wireless ball mouse, it does not become uncontrollable but it still slows my laptop right down. My desktop PC is fine and doesn't have any of these problems but my laptop is being very problematic.

This sounds like a track ball mouse, have you tried using just the touchpad?

Is the mouse a Logitech?

I still get the slowing + erratic behaviour in any DirectX applications and I have tryed the solutions put forward in that article

Ok uninstall any logitech software and uninstall the mouse in Device Manager.

Reboot and let XP find the mouse again without reinstalling the logitech software.

Try that and get back to us.

Well I'm not sure where I heard it but I hear wireless optical mice are not the best mice to have when gaming, have you ever tried just a scrappy old normal PS2 ball mouse?
Posted
Yes I have 2 and I always used PS/2 ball mice because they are very reliable, until I started to get this annoying mouse problem about 2 weeks ago

Did you install any new software or hardware two weeks ago?

Do you have any Yellow question marks in Device Manager?

When was the last time you changed the batteries in the mouse?

Posted
No yellow question marks in device manager and I changed the batteries recently, but still, the wired mice have the same problems

See if the problem occurs in Safe Mode:

Keep tapping F8 as soon as you turn on the laptop. A boot menu will appear in which you can choose Safe Mode.

Ok have you tried going into Control Panel and disabling the touchpad?

I also feel that this has something to do with gaming but I'm not sure.

How can I disable the touchpad?

I have searched but I cannot find it as it appears as a PS/2 mouse and I cannot uninstall/disable it.

Try what Seth said as Safe Mode will load base drivers only.

Go into Device Manager, then right click on the touchpad and choose Disable.
