Teabags Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 I have decided to move over to iOS and give it a try, so have bought a refurbished Mac Pro with Yosemite. Being Windows orientated I am completely muddled (multiple grey moments) but my initial problem is I cannot log in with the password I created the account with, both lower and upper case correct. I changed to the same password on my iPad and that works so could anyone suggest an easy way to change this on the Mac. Many thanks in advance. Quote
Ray1000 Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 I'm even more lost than you on Apple products but I wondered if some slight variation of the password might do it ... I'm working on the assumption you may have hit a wrong key or wrongly started with a capital perhaps. Ray Quote

Ray I did a restore to factory settings this evening which took nearly three hours, which I thought would have worked, but no, gone in a complete circle and back to original logo, my name and password request. This puzzled me as I would have done this if I intended to sell it on so why has it not 'erased' me? Quote
seedy21 Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Hi Teabags If you ran the system Installation all you did was replace the system files. WARNING THE BELOW INSTRUCTIONS WILL ERASE ALL DATA FROM YOUR MACHINE If you want to restore the machine back to factory settings you would need to start from the Recovery partition or CD, Click Utilities and then Disk Utility. Then you can seleted you Hard Disk and then Erase it. Then you can continue the System Install as normal and it will remove all User Data and Application Data. Teabags Posted March 27, 2015 Author Posted March 27, 2015 Thanks for the replies. Now had this laptop factory reset professionally and hope to recycle it. My only remaining query is that even though it's been reset, my surname still appears as 'admin' and again it seems one has to jump through convoluted hoops to erase this, so is there an EASY way to do it as I don't want to dispose of it with my name in it. Thank you. Quote
KenB Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Hi Teabags I am away from home at the moment and don't have access to my Win7 machine ............. For confirmation ....... are you saying that when you look at the Users your surname is there with an Admin account ? Teabags Posted March 28, 2015 Author Posted March 28, 2015 When I click on the Apple icon in the top left corner I have a menu which includes Force Quit, Sleep, Restart, Shut Down then lastly Log Out surname. This has been re-set as I said because it has reverted back to Mavericks from Yosemite. System Preferences-Users & Groups-current user surname Admin. I don't want to start fiddling and make things worse so can I assume there will be no further info. Quote
KenB Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 Hi Teabags - forget my last post. I was looking at the OS shown in your profile ( Win 7 Pro ) didn't realise that you were referring to a different OS. One of the other guys should be able to help - I am a Windows man :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! seedy21 Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 Hi Teabag, I would double check that Icloud in System Prefferences and make your your details are not in there. When your Systrm Pref check I telnet accounts and make sure your details are also not in there if you dont feel confortable , you could reinstall the OS from the instructions I provided in my previous post and not continue with the set up when it completes it. Teabags Posted April 8, 2015 Author Posted April 8, 2015 Just to update. I have erased the HD with the plan to download and re-install either Mavericks or Yosemite, now all I get is 'This item is temporarily unavailable' Try again later. It seems that one is unable to download the OS for whatever reason. I have no disk but could buy Snow Leopard and try that......any thoughts would be appreciated as I really want to ditch this laptop. Quote
