Slumdog Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Ok, so after being out of the country for a few months, I have returned to my problem laptop! Dell xps1530 I have now installed the new hard drive , along with the Windows Vista Home Premium (32) disc and the drivers and utilities disc. I am able to connect to the internet. The problem I now have is that when trying to install programs, such as AVG, I am getting an error message which says "Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site" followed by the http address then "Operation aborted" The same occurs when trying to install Chrome. Thanks guys for any help........................ Quote
Slumdog Posted March 31, 2015 Author Posted March 31, 2015 It allowed me to download Mozilla and I am able to download AVG etc while using that. I will try again tomorrow as it is now getting overheated and my head is about to explode! Quote

Slumdog Posted April 4, 2015 Author Posted April 4, 2015 Hello again! Waited to receive a new cooling device as it was getting far too hot. Now, once again, when I turn the power on all I am getting is a black screen. It was working before, albeit at a high temp, but now nothing.Don't get it. #frustrated Quote
KenB Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 Hi I am away fro home for a few days - so responses may be slow. "New cooling device" ..... what have you added ? If this was a CPU- heatsink ....did you clean off the old thermal-paste and apply new ? [ or am I barking up the wrong tree ?? ] Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
Slumdog Posted April 5, 2015 Author Posted April 5, 2015 [ or am I barking up the wrong tree ?? ] Yes, totally!!! Just a cooling fan that the laptop sits on!! Your thinking is far too advanced for me!!! Quote
KenB Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 Hi Slumdog Sorry for the slow response .........I have been away from home. So - you are using a cooling pad to sit the laptop on ? If this is the case it will have no effect on cooling issues on startup. Try getting a can of compressed air. [ any computer shop or even car accessories shops ] Spray through the vents. Use short blasts as long blasts will produce liquid [ the propellant from inside the can ] Dust can build up inside the confined space and cause over-heating problems. Slumdog Posted April 8, 2015 Author Posted April 8, 2015 The over heating was only happening when it had been on for a while. (The reason I bought the cooling pad). The problem I am now having is that I cannot get it to start up, at all. It was fine before when I had first replaced the hard drive. Now, the lights flash, the fan starts, then stops within a few seconds. Than all I have is a black screen. I have tried tapping F8, nothing. Quote
KenB Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 Hi Lights flashing - fan running then .....nothing - this is indicative of a CPU overheating. Try the can of compressed air through the vents. [ Short bursts ] You could also try taking out the RAM modules. Switch on with no RAM in place. If you get a different reaction then put just one RAM module back in. Switch on again. If you are back to shutting down - swap the RAM modules over and try the other one. [ this assumes that you have 2 RAM modules ] The RAM is usually located underneath a panel in the base of the laptop. You will need a small screwdriver. Plastic Nev Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 As a plus to Kens advice, I see you said that you have replaced the hard drive, it is worth checking that it is still fully connected correctly, if the laptop was jarred it just might have worked loose. If all seems OK, if possible check the hard drive is still OK by trying it on another computer, you won't be able to boot from it but you can check it is working and can access the data on it. Very rare, but sometimes you can get a duff drive that doesn't last very long. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here.
