Ken, I've run the instructions in thread #95 again, here are the results,

http://speccy.piriform.com/results/vrU3sTCW2qvFO0yxvVbGNed

Ms Word started ok then went into not responding,

Opened IE seemed ok then went into not responding mode,

MSE would not run a scan, tried three times,

Speccy took 50 seconds just to open, but at least it worked,

After I've posted this I will re-run the instructions in post #98.

Jontye.

Just as I was about to post this reply, guess what, not responding, so I've had to do it again.

A message for Ken really, however, after adding together all the processes running and memory used for each, which was a long job, a double check of the figures showed a total of 1261.115 MB, or roughly 1.261GB in use, which seems quite a bit.

However, Speccy shows this.

The 1.87GB showing in speccy leaving 0.609GB will be the small amount extra being used by the services, now I know the graphics will be using some, but surely not the difference of 1.13GB of the total 3GB, so what is using all of that, leaving only 177MB free?

Any idea's as to what may be hogging that RAM Ken?

Hi Ken, I've run the instructions in post #98, and the results were more or less the same those for post #95 apart from in #95 I was automatically connected to my Broadband, when I opened the desktop in#98 there was no connection. I had to Fn + F2 to open up the wifi.

I then moved onto your instructions in post#100, opened the System Configuration Panel, Normal Start, Start Up Tab, and all of the boxes were ticked, I thought that I may have made a mistake so reset to Normal Start, Start Up, unticked all of the boxes ( they all had a tick against them ) restarted the laptop.

When the laptop had restarted I opened the System Configuration Panel, and it showed the Selective Start as ticked not the Normal Start up, opened both the Services and Start Up Tabs and all of the boxes had ticks against them. ( yet another problem ? )

One other point I've been meaning to ask you about is Windows Updates, when I was dealing with Speedy he advised me to leave the updates until the problem was solved, when I checked this morning we have 53 important updates waiting for action, do I leave them or try and download/install them, which may take about a year with the constant 'not responding' problem.

Hi Jontye, I also saw in the speccy report a lot of failed updates. For now leave them unless Ken says otherwise, lets first try to get to the bottom of what is using so much memory that is slowing everything down.

I've run the instructions in thread #95

I didn't ask you to do this ??

We had the machine running OK with all of the boxes in msconfig > Start-Up unchecked.

I asked you to go back and check anything related to your AV. [ post #100 ]

I am now confused as to where we are.

Any idea's as to what may be hogging that RAM Ken?

I thought it was something in Start-Up as the RAM usage came down from 95% to 51% with all items unchecked.

I wanted to re-introduce the necessary ones to see what the results where.

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Hi Ken, Sorry for the confusion but this problem is driving me crazy, we've been on this for three months and we seem to be nowhere near to solving it.

My Wife wants a laptop that works , so she has decided to buy another one.

Thanks very much for the effort you, Speedy and Nev have put in, but I think I need to call it a day.

Regards Jontye.

Hi Jontye. Just saw this thread. The Laptop has pretty good specs and I am sure with a bit more input from Ken and the Techies they will find the culprit causing the slowness. Cost a fair bit to go buy another Laptop and who is to say in 6mths the new one starts to run slow.

ASUS are very good Lappies.

Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.

Thanks for the input but I'm no techy and I feel that I'm struggling to carrying out the instructions correctly, which is causing me stress. Plus the fact that my wife has not had a fully functioning laptop for quite a while and she is running out of patience, which is understandable when it takes upto 15 minutes to carry out a simple search on the internet.

OK Jontye and DSTM, no doubt that between us all, eventually we could find what the problem is, but it could take a good deal more time, or we could get lucky and the next thing we try works the magic, we just don't know!

However as you said we have spent a lot of time already, and also Mrs Jontye wants a working laptop, so I understand and no doubt Ken does too, so if the money is available a new laptop is an answer.

However if buying a new laptop do keep this one to one side, once the stress has been forgotten and the dust has settled, we can always come back to it later.

Hi Nev. I don't think it is the answer everytime you get a difficult issue with a computer go out and buy a new one.

I think you have to look outside the square in this particular case.

Hi Nev, DSTM, I will most probably take you up on your suggestion of returning to the problem at some later date, as I'm curious to know what is causing the problem.

But at this moment in time my good Lady Wife needs a laptop she can rely on, and sharing mine is not a long term solution, so I'm afraid I'm going to have to part with some cash.

I look forward to the next part of the saga.

OK Jontye, the good lady has to be kept happy as a priority of course.

However, whenever you feel up to it come back to this thread and we can carry on if we can, there has to be something running in the background that is using up all that memory, it is just a long process sometimes to find it.

I just read every post an excellent advice given.I have some ideas to try one day when you have the time.

I will discuss them when I next speak with Nev on Skype.
