Bringe Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 Hi to everyone, Ihope your all well:) Yet another problem in xp. The recycle bin icon shows trash in the recycle bin but when I open it there is nothing there. But when I click on empty recycle bin, I get a message asking if I want to delete these 7 items??? I have not deleted them because if I cant see them I dont know what damage they can do. They wont cut and paste anywhere either. Any help will be greatly appreciated:hippie: Bringe. Quote
RandyL Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 Hi Bringe. Try this. Type something in Notepad. Give it a name and save it somewhere. Now delete the saved Notepad file. Right click the Recycle bin icon and click Empty Recycle bin. This was a known issue on older Windows versions. The items were deleted but for some reason they appear to still be there but can't be seen. The above step should resolve the confusion. Quote We are all members helping other members. Bringe Posted May 20, 2015 Author Posted May 20, 2015 Hi RandyL. Many thanks for that idea. It worked!! But ime always a bit concerned about deleting files into nowhere, they must go somewhere. and if one of the invisible files in the recycle bin is a virus or something, it could come back to bite you at a later date. Thats why I like to see whats in the bin and cut and paste onto a usb stick and delete the junk from there. Anyway. here's another little problem, ille post it here because it may be related to the recycle bin problem. On startup this window (see pic) has started appearing. Any idea what it means and what its for and how can I cure it?? Bringe. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 Hi Bringe That is one of the many Windows hidden files, which look like it somehow is one of those that finished up in the bin. Unfortunately now lost for good. The only hope now is do you have a full Windows XP disk, not a manufacturers repair or recovery disk, it must be a Microsoft Windows XP disk, or do you know where you might borrow one? If you do it may be possible to reinstall that now missing file using the system file checker. Let us know if you have the disk first! Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Bringe Posted May 21, 2015 Author Posted May 21, 2015 Hi Plastic Nev. Many Thanks for your reply. Ime afraid I dont have a windows xp disc and have no idea where to borrow one. What I do have is another pc running xp, almost a carbon copy of this one as I cloned the hard drive a while ago. so is it possible to find that file on the other pc and copy and paste it into this pc?? Plastic Nev Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 OK Bringe, there may be a rescue available, first of all you will need to run the "sfc /scannow", (note there must be a space between sfc and the forward slash / ) It may well ask for the XP CD, however there is a way round, which will mean finding the I386 folder within the Windows system files. (Note it is the letter I, not number 1 at the start of I386 ) This article gives a good explanation, however if the I386 folder on your present machine is corrupted, you may be able to copy it from the other computer. as you don't have a disk, worth a try. http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html I know it is a bit long winded, however it does give a lot of useful information and saves me typing it all. If at the end of it all and you still cannot sort the problem, a reputable dealer repairer will most likely still have his own disk for performing full system repairs. You may have a fee to pay for a repair service. A windows repair, if done correctly does not damage or delete any of your data, files, music video, etc. Nev. Bringe Posted May 22, 2015 Author Posted May 22, 2015 Hi Plastic Nev.:) Many Thanks for your reply. I Knew I had seen this I386 somewhere. If i click on my local disc "c" drive, there is a folder at the top left with a very long name with numbers and letters. I dont recall ever creating it but thought it best to leave it alone. If I click on it there are 2 folders inside. amd64 and i386 with a small "i" If I click on that there are 7 items inside. Can you tell if it is correct or corrupted??? I have included some pics to show what I mean. Many thanks for your help. Plastic Nev Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 Hi, yes the i386 folder is the one you want, however there is no way of telling if it is corrupt, damaged or files missing without trying it. However, nothing to stop you copying that folder from the other computer if the first does seem damaged. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Bringe Posted May 23, 2015 Author Posted May 23, 2015 Hi Plastic Nev. Thanks for your reply and the link to scannow sfc. I have read through it a couple of times and feel that its a bit over my head :fear:It mentions that the I386 file is 475mb. but the one I have is 2.42mb. so I doubt it will work. I have been just clicking the ok button on the message that pops up and it goes away and the pc seems fine. I will have a look later on my other pc to see the size of the I386 on there. But as its a clone, I think it may be the same. ill'e let you know. Many thanks for your help. Bringe. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 OK, Bringe, let us know if you need more help, though removing the message is OK, there may be a time when you want something and it won't work because of that missing file.. Just have to see how things go. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. If Free PC Help has helped you then please consider a donation. Bringe Posted May 25, 2015 Author Posted May 25, 2015 Hi Plastic Nev. I think I may have clicked on the report post icon by mistake. I had written an esay with pictures regarding this problem and when I tried to post it, I had to log in again and half of it was deleted. Ille atempt it again tomorrow. Best Regards. Bringe Posted May 27, 2015 Author Posted May 27, 2015 Hi Plastic Nev:) Sorry for the delay. ille keep my esay shorter. I was just going to say that I checked the i386 file on my other pc and it is the same size 2.42kb. I guess it would be as its a clone. I did a search on i386 and got 37 results. 36 with i386 (small letter i) and 1 with I386 (capital letter I) the 36 with the small i were scattered everywhere on the pc and the 1 with the capital I was in C:/WINDOWS. I opened the holding folder and its size was 0 bytes. So I dont think ime getting anywhere with this idea. So I had the idea that I would clone the clone then use that hard drive and hopefully the original mesage will be cured. Its a long way round but hopefully it will work??? Many Thanks for your help. Plastic Nev Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 Hi, it might and it might not work, no harm trying I suppose, though Windows XP was very fussy about running on different computers. I still think that it might be best if a genuine Windows XP disk could be found, then the system could be repaired correctly. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems?
