Robbieleics Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 Hi all,newbie here and desperately looking for your help please! I have a Samsung NP305V5A running win 7 home premium. In a rush, I've connected an external blue ray drive which was connected to an overpowered plug. As soon as I connected the device by USB the laptop powered off instantly and is now completely unresponsive. I've had the battery out, held down the power and tried again, tried disconnecting all USB devices and tried, left it to charge a while and tried, and reseated the ram. Nothing has worked yet. When pressing the power button, it literally does nothing at all, no boot, no noise, no light. The only thing I can see is the charging light comes on then it's plugged in, otherwise its a paperweight. Any help would really be appreciated please! Rob Quote

I was hoping I could find a free service manual for that model, unfortunately they seem to be like hens teeth. The only reason I was looking was to see if there was a possibility of some form of power circuit fuse on the motherboard. Even if there is, which is rare on laptops any way, it would mean a disassembly of the laptop to get to it. However, from you description it sounds like some sort of blow out on the main power circuit, either a fuse or a more expensive component has gone pop. Some laptops the power management is a separate card, others it is a part of the main motherboard, and if not confident in dismantling, which without the service manual I wouldn't attempt myself, I can only recommend taking it to a competent repair technician. Laptops are notorious for being very fidley and too easy to break something, and especially so without the dismantling instructions that most service manuals contain. KenB Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Hi and welcome. I can't add much to what Nev has said. I am puzzled over this statement ... blue ray drive which was connected to an overpowered plug. Overpowered plug ?? I assume the Blue Ray drive was powered by an adapter and connected by USB-cable to the laptop ? There are 4 wires in a USB-cable. An output 5v and Earth..........and a Data + and Data - The 5v is used to power external devices ( unless they have their own power source ) This is normally 500 mA Unless there was a short on the USB-cable from the Blue Ray device I can't see how this would have damaged the USB port on the laptop. I would be tempted to test this before connecting it to another laptop. Take a look at the laptop USB-port. If this is showing signs of burning it may be that the short is here.
