i tired pressing f10 but it took me to some RAID screen when should i press f10?

I managed to get into WINDOWS RECOVERY CONSOLE and typed CHKDSK and it says:

 

THE VOLUME APPEARS TO CONTAIN ONE OR MORE UNRECOVERABLE PROBLEMS....

 

gulp... what now?

That is exactly why I was suggesting you run a chkdsk. In other words, the "volume" is your hard drive which stores all the software and is now on its death bed.

 

Your only option at this point is to purchase a new hard drive and reinstall XP.

Power failures is normally a big problem especially if it happens when the hard disk tries to read or write. So if you are in a area where there are a lot of power failures a UPS would be a good investment.

It depends. They may be gone or if you're lucky you might still be able to recover some of them. The best thing to do would be to connect that drive to another functioning PC as a secondary drive and see if you can copy any data to maybe an external USB drive and/or use Recovery software to retrieve back some data.

 

Why it happened ? Difficult to say but hardware can and does fail some times in the blink of an eye. That is what makes backing up your data VERY IMPORTANT.

 

How to prevent, probably nothing you can do to prevent if it was a hardware failure. Just make sure you always have up to date backups of all the data you create and the CD/DVD for all the software you install.
