dobal Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 I have an ongoing problem I can not solve, and hoping to find some assistance. At startup, the following error displays: In the event the image is not legible, the error states: The module "C:\Users\DwightObal\AppData\Local\Digital River\MSXML2.dll" failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files. The specified module could not be found." I am running Windows 7 Home Premium, sp1 on a system I built about 2-3 years ago. I am fairly certain this error occurred as the result of an attempt to remove software of some kind, but honestly have no idea. I have run searches on my system for the folder location, and for "digital river" but it appears this location doesn't even exist on my system. All I can guess is the registry is looking for something that has been deleted but honestly have no clue how to begin making a fix so the system isn't looking for a file that is gone. I've searched the internet to no avail, and RegSvr32 help sections are written in English but I am not able to comprehend them. Any assistance on how to isolate and / or fix this would be very much appreciated. Thank you. Regards, Dwight Quote

KenB Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 Hi and welcome from me too. If you follow the path - click on C: > users > DwightObal ......etc Does .......Digital River and specifically MSXML2.dll actually exist ? That is an odd location for a .dll file. They are normally is System32 I have MSXML3.dll / 3r / 6 /6r [ 4 files ] on my system .all of which are in System32 folder. Have a look in System32 to see if MSXML(?).dll if they are there please. Start > C: > Windows > System32 Have you updated your MS Updates recently ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! dobal Posted July 14, 2015 Author Posted July 14, 2015 Thank you both for the response. Nev, I purchased Install version of Windows 7 Home Premium with the system so I have the disk. Ken, when I follow the folder path I do not see an "App Data\Local" branch to follow. Searches for Digital River turn up empty. Searches for MSXML turn up the following, so evidently there is a Digital River folder somewhere just not visible to me in the folder tree. There is a MSXML2 file with the .IDX extension. In the System32 folder, there is a 3, 3r, 6, and 6r. For grins, I modified the file extension of the .IDX to .DLL. On restart, this is the new error message: I'd really like to figure out what process / why Digital River is being called, but at this point I'd simply like the error message to go away. I'm trying to avoid a re-install, but given the SSD is too small I may just got and get a larger drive and do a clean install. I just prefer to solve problems because that's how I learn. Appreciate any thoughts either of you have, and thanks again. Dwight Quote
Plastic Nev Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Hi, up until recently, the website "Digital River" was the legal host site for Windows downloads, Hence why I asked where you obtained the operating system from. However if you bought the disk, it rules that out. So a search of what msxml2.dll is revealed this page :- http://www.processlibrary.com/en/directory/files/msxml2/28136/ It would seem to be a part of some third party software, have you recently uninstalled a program that this might be a part of? dobal Posted July 16, 2015 Author Posted July 16, 2015 Thanks Nev. Yes, I do believe the error began as a result of a software uninstall. Unfortunately, I have no idea which program since it has not been a recent event ... (I moved about a year ago and did some system clean-up prior to moving, computer sat in storage for a long time, now trying to solve the issue). Quote
RandyL Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Here is my opinion on what might be happening. First of all the AppData folder is a hidden folder. Digital River is a software vendor that distributes software for other companies. Mcafee is one company that used to partner with them. I think you are correct that this is the result of a poorly written uninstall for some piece of software. There is probably some leftovers that did not uninstall properly and at startup the registry wants to load an item from the folder location that no longer exists. It may be possible to delete the offending startup registry key but this can not only be dangerous unless you are highly skilled with the registry but it may be impossible to locate even with a registry search. I do not recommend this option. One thing I might suggest is a System Restore to before you uninstalled programs. You could then make manual restore points before you uninstall individual programs one at a time then reboot after each uninstall. Once you discover the error again restore to the previous point. If you find the offending program there may be a better way to uninstall it clean. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else.
