Just received an email saying the following.."We want to give every customer a great upgrade experience, so we’re rolling it out in an organized way to manage high demand and to make sure that the upgrade is right for your device. After July 29, when Windows 10 is ready for your device, it will download in the background. You’ll then get a notification to schedule your upgrade right away or at another time that’s convenient for you."

I cancelled my Windows 10 reservation but they are sending emails and making it sound like they are going to download it anyway, whether I want it or not...I'm worried I won't have a choice in the end. :-(

Are we being forced in to this and what can we do?

Thanks

Hi H20,

Are we being forced in to this and what can we do?

Whether you decide to upgrade or not is entirely up to you.

The upgrade will be made available to you on or around the 29th July.... but you don't have to install it.

I cancelled my Windows 10 reservation but they are sending emails and making it sound like they are going to download it anyway

It's probably just a ploy on their part.

Make out that they haven't received your cancellation, in the hope that you'll change your mind

But at the end of the day it's your decision whether it gets installed or not.

I made the mistake of reserving Win10 for my Win8.1 .... which is part of a triple boot on one computer.

As I already have Win10 on that system it seemed silly to have the OS twice on the same computer..... so I cancelled the upgrade.

If and when it comes through I'll just ignore it.

As far as I can tell, the downloaded Windows 10 will just sit there on your hard drive, possibly in your downloads folder. If wishing to stick with the present operating system, I see nothing to prevent you from deleting the download before installing it.

However, at present I don't think anyone really knows as to exactly where or in what folder the download will be put by Microsoft. It may well be a case of hide and seek to find it.

Otherwise if you do decide to install Windows 10, and then find you don't like it, you can roll back to the present operating system, I assume Windows 7.

I uninstalled the update that put the Windows 10 icon in my system tray, but it just came back again - I am happy with Windows 7 on my desktop PC and don't want Windows 10, neither do I want the Windows 10 update taking up space on my hard drive.

Whenever Windows updates scans and install any updates or patches, they get stored on the following location:

windows\softwaredistribution\download

Depending upon the updates, different folders get created on the above location.

Whether Microsoft will use this location to store the Win10, remains to be seen.

I doubt we'll know until it starts to get downloaded on or around the 29th.

I am happy with Windows 7 on my desktop PC and don't want Windows 10,

On January 13, 2015, Microsoft stopped mainstream support for Windows 7.

Once mainstream support ends, there will be no more service packs. Microsoft won't redesign the environment or add new features.

Without a special extended agreement, you won't get patches for bugs that don't result in a security threat.

Microsoft doesn't plan to stop fixing security problems in Windows 7 until extended support ends. That's January 14, 2020.

I can only add that you read again Starbucks last post above mine and make sure you understand the implications. I am only trying to make sure you understand what you may be up against, I am not trying to persuade you in any direction. After all I intend keeping Windows 7 in one form or another after I have checked out Windows 10, but I do know all the implications.

Even if you delete the Windows 10 upgrade files, I suspect Microsoft will still send out nuisance nag windows trying to persuade you. You may have to put up with just closing them when they appear.

In my opinion at the moment Windows 7 is definitely the best Microsoft have created.and for now the fact that they will continue to send security updates until 2020 is good enough for me. No doubt the third party security companies such as those providing antivirus, antimalware, and firewall will continue to do so for Wondows 7 just as they are now for Windows XP. With perhaps some giving a cut off point at some time in the future.

Just a point to remember, that Windows 10 is only free for one year, so after July29th 2016, even if you kept but did not install it, you will not be able to install it for free after that date, you will be charged a fee to activate it. Microsoft have been quite clear on that point.

As I think it has already been mentioned, you can install Windows 10 just to see if you can work with it and get used to it. However if after that you decide it just isn't for you and you hate it, you can roll back to Windows 7.

Starbuck posted a good tutorial on how to roll back to Windows 7 or for Windows 8 users, back to Windows 8 or 8.1 here :-

I hope that between us we have helped to clear up any points or issues you feel you may have about the subject.

If Windows Updates is set to Automatic it will install the update again unless you Hide that particular update.

The update numbered KB 3035583 is the one that installs the task bar notification. I hid it the first time round, however Microsoft pushed it out again two weeks back with some other general updates, which over rode the original uninstall and hidden one.

Here is the description of the update KB3035583.

You can of course uninstall and hide the update again if you wish. Though somehow I doubt it will stop Microsoft getting the Windows 10 installer on to your computer one way or the other. We are definitely going to have to be stubborn and keep on top of uninstallling it if we don't want it.

I've found out where Win10 will be stored on your system:

To check to see if your machine is getting ready for Windows 10, head over to File Explorer, first making sure that "show hidden files" is enabled (you can hide the files again after you checked if you don't want a bunch of extra stuff in your File Explorer).

Windows 7, it's File Explorer > Organize > Folder Options > View > Show hidden files, folders, and drives:

Windows 8.1, it's File Explorer > View > check Hidden items.

Then, just navigate to C: in File Explorer and you should see a new folder, \$Windows.~BT. That's where the new OS is being temporarily stored, once it's downloaded. You can right click on the folder, choose Properties, and see how big the folder is.

And no you can't start the installation early.
