This started with the scanner giving a communcation error on the Dell V505 AIO printer scanner. The printer side works well, so I tried restoring to a previous date and got the above error. It used to work fine so I do not know why it does not work now. I do not use the scanner as frequently as the printer. Pressing the "tick" mark on the printer dial works the printer but did not have to before having updated the driver to R264508.exe

A point that might make a difference is that when I connect in the USB cable following the install wizard for the printer driver, It looks as if it installs the cable so********e and not the wireless gubbins. I add that this was done only when the wizard prompted.

Jim

PS I am unsure where this resides - I assumed this one because it is the system that gives the error.

Hi Jim

Not sure why the board software censored the word - software - this is odd as it obviously isn't on the list of naughty words.

Re your printer problem:

Did you uninstall the original drivers before you tried the new ones ?

Do you have another machine that you can try the printer on ?

============

The 0x8000ffff error is common when using system restore.

It is something to do with file conflicts.

If you want to try it again try it in Administrator Mode.

Start > type in ....system restore .... right click on system restore in the left panel > run as administrator.

[ assuming Win 7 ]

I tried that and no-matter what I right clicked on nothing opened. Not that it matters cuz would you believe it, it worked this time!

I tried it 3 times previously assuming (as one does) that I had mis-typed something.

Ah well, computers - bah - humbug!

Problem solved I think. Oh, will have to try the scanner now .

Well it worked for the 'restore' but that did not solve the scanner communication problem.

Should I now go over to the printer section of the site to seek help with the scanner? I suppose I could try it on SWMBO's machine first. Although it was working fine on this one previously.

Hi Jim - keep the thread here please - it is easier :)

I would try it on your wife's machine.

If, after installing the up-to-date drivers it still will not scan then it looks like the scanner function has died :(

Dell V505 AIO scanner/printer

I thought I had typed out this problem before but I cannot see it anywhere.

I have tried 4 things to scan but neither will work.

I

1. Used the USB connection and cable (I assumed the wireless router/wireless connection was faulty)

2. Used the Dell online download of the R something or other wireless driver that worked before.

3. Tried scanning a copy of a page with everything switched off (router and computer).

4. Turned it upside down and shook it in case anything had dropped inside it.

The scanner failed to scan.

Is it worth trying anything?

Little wonder that I was unable to find it and repeat posted the problem there :) Please delete again :)

So replacement necessary? Nothing can be done with the old one? Oh dear. :( Still they are cheap these days.:)

As Ken suggested, try it on the wife's computer first, if you still have a problem, it just might be only the scanning lamp failed which can possibly be replaced.

It looks like the scanner part has died Jim :(

Yes, it looks that way. Bother, I'll have to look through the addies I suppose.

Thanks for the help.

Just ordered the Epson 422 and some colour cartridges from our friendly forest peeps. I did get a new Epson from them just before the warranty ran out awhile back.

Obviously the manufacturer wouldn't/didn't argue with them.:biggrin1:

Can you recommend anywhere online that might help me take the old one to bits and learn something about them/diagnose its problem - or shall I just throw it?

Without some pretty fancy test equipment and knowledge how to use it, I doubt you would be able to diagnose the fault Jim. However no harm in dismantling it to see how the mechanical bits work before sending it to the recycling point.

My test equipment is limited to a multimeter and a capacity meter and my thinking equipment much worse for the ravages of time. Hmmm throw it in the recycle centre then. The new one arrived today and it is all set-up and is working uncy-dory.

A by the way is SWMBO said I could have her printer of the same make as it did not work properly.

It had run low on ink and it was defaulting to some other driver I had not heard off.

It now works uncy-dory l;ike mine

Problem solved, many thanks guys.
