Ok, every year I spend the winter in India. The guesthouse where I stay, last year, installed free Wi-Fi for guests.

This laptop would not connect correctly (no one else had a problem).....it always said "limited connection".

I had obviously used his password correctly and anywhere else I went with the laptop, it connected immediately to other Wi-Fi hot spots.

This was rather frustrating as I ended up having to purchase mobile broadband on a dongle and that is not cheap in India!!

I was told I had to get his IP address and input that manually, but naturally, he had no idea what an IP address was.

Any ideas on how to connect when I go in December? Thanks.

Hi, I can't really help with the actual connection itself, however I can point you to a website that will give you the IP address of whatever computer connects to it.

So you would need to first use a computer, his or perhaps another guest which can connect OK to then bring up this website.

The page opens automatically with the current IP address showing, you can then click on the "Look up IP address" button which should show you the ISP (Internet service provider) and also roughly where in the world the computer is. That will help to double check the computer and at least the country which of course you will know.

Check it with your own present position of your computer now. However don't expect it to be accurate about the town or city, as that depends sometimes on where the main ISP's servers are.

Hope that is of help.

Nev.

Thanks, I thought I would have to wait until I am there!

But would that ring true that I have to do it manually? Bit confused as it works in any other hot spot and everyone else's connects perfectly, straight away.

Hi Slumdog

I am away from home at the moment - but wifi seems ok for the moment.

I had a similar problem last year and the year before on a caravan site - the same site.

I couldn't get wireless internet access even if I stood next to the router.

Others on the site had no problem.

This year ( same site ) I have no problem at all.

Why?

The owners have installed a new router.

I am using this connection at the moment.

I doubt that the problem lies with your machine.

Sometimes routers create problems that there is no logical answer to.

Hopefully the guest house may have bought a new router and your problem may be solved.

If not - ask them to switch it off - at night when nobody will be using it - leave it for an hour or so.

The router needs to be off for a long time for the ISP to re-allocate the IP Address.

The ISP will allocate a new IP Address when it is switched on again.

This may solve your problem if it is IP Address related.

Hi KenB, it does connect to his wifi but states "limited connection" which doesn't enable me to get internet access. It may as well say "not connected" seeing as I cannot access anything!!!

Hi

"Limited Connection" is router speak for "no connection at all !! "

This doesn't mean that you have a partial connection - read it as "no connection"

I still think the problem is related to the router.

It is difficult to try to guess when you don't have access to the router at the moment. :(
