greko Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 Hi folks. Hope someone can advise a 64 year old who used to be good with computers but way behind now! I have a Samsun Notebook which runs windows 7 starter. It has become unbelievably slow now and I think it is due to the anything up to 46 updates it insists on downloading at the end of each internet usage. Now whilst I am happy to keep my ESET up to date and Rapport, I have no idea what all the other ones are that start downloading as soon as I try to close down. Even though I tried unplugging the Notebook, when I next switched on, yes it continued to obstinately keep up dating. Also tried ctrl alt del to see if that would stop it but no, not even that. Someone told me you don't need all the samsung and windows updates but I don't know how to stop them and which I really need - any ideas? cheers all greko Quote
DSTM Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 Hi Greko. Welcome to FPCH. Updates are made available for a reason and should be installed. This (Someone) you speak about doesn't know what they are talking about. Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
Starbuck Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 Now whilst I am happy to keep my ESET up to date and Rapport Rapport has been know to create all sorts of problems. I for one wouldn't have it on any of my systems. My mother installed it on her system and rang me to come and find out why her PC was crawling like a snail. Uninstalled Rapport and it started to fly again. Eset will do a better job than Rapport. Don't always take your banks word for things. Quote Member of:UNITE
greko Posted October 8, 2015 Author Posted October 8, 2015 Thanks a lot, it was still chronically slow before Rapport but I will delete it and see if it flies - would be wonderful..... cheers! Quote
greko Posted October 8, 2015 Author Posted October 8, 2015 OK, I do accept that - in that case what can I do about the slowness? Every laptop, PC and now this Notebook I buy starts off great then within 6 months to a year, I can almost go make a coffee waiting for them to start up. I sit timing the seconds from clicking an e-mail to it actually opening, usually at least 5-7 secs! I hear people moaning about Broadband speeds and it makes me smile... cheers and thanks to both of you for your replies greko Quote
Starbuck Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Hi greko Every laptop, PC and now this Notebook I buy starts off great then within 6 months to a year, I can almost go make a coffee waiting for them to start up. It sounds very much like the system needs a good clean out of temp files etc. The quick way of doing this is, to follow these instructions and run the fixlist I have added. The fixlist just contains a script to remove all temp files etc from the system. We normally add this to a fix script when helping to clean systems. It will run on any Windows operating system from Win7 - Win10.... so it's perfectly safe. I run this once a week on my systems. Note: There are both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Farbar Recovery Scan Tool available. Please pick the version that matches your operating system's bit type. If you are unsure what you're system bit type is..... click Here for help. For x32 bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop. For x64 bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64 and save it to your Desktop. Double-click the downloaded icon to run the tool. Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/frsticon_zpsdc3cbdc3.png When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/frstdis_zps7f598f12.png Now: Please download the attached fixlist.txt file (bottom of this post) and save it to the Desktop. NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work. Now press the Fix button just once and wait. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/frstfix_zps7db0c905.png The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post this in your next reply. This would be the first step I'd suggest.fixlist.txt Quote Member of:UNITE

Plastic Nev Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 It's always a help and good idea to print off instructions such as those so you can read through and fully follow each part. The alternative is have it displayed on another computer. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here.
