What Ho Chaps :) - have not popped in for a while as basically things have been going swimmingly.

So swimmingly in fact that I thought I might chance my arm and provide myself with a bit of excitement by upgrading my W8 to W10.

But is it - in your experience worth it ?

Then of course how do I do it - I'd want it to be "freemans" so do I have to go through the hassle of upgrading to 8.1 before doing the upgrading to W10 ?

As ever your experiences very welcome.

Would I recommend Windows10 at the moment? No

I would wait a few months yet till Microsoft get Windows10 more user friendly.

I had Windows10 on three machines. Rolled back two of them.

Windows 10 has privacy issues, secret Windows updates and generic driver downloads which some don't work properly.

Not excitement more of a dam headache.

Yes you can upgrade straight from Windows8 to Windows10 and roll back within 30days if you don't like it.

I would upgrade to Windows8.1 and use that OS.

Does everything Windows10 does with less hassle.

Only benefits I have found with Windows10 you can transfer Data quicker but how often do you do that.

That's my opinion in a nutshell.

Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.

I actually prefer Win10 over 7 or 8.1

I think the privacy issues will always be with us..... I can't see M$ changing anything. ( so you do have to tweak the settings a bit)

As I'm running Win10 pro, the updates aren't much of a problem for me.

My 2 Win10 systems run faster than my Win7 or Win8.1 systems.... but I agree there's not a huge difference between 8.1 and 10.

One of the Win10 systems is an Insider Preview (Build 10565)..... some have had issues, but have to say I haven't encountered any so far.

I've upgraded a few systems for workmates..... some like 10 and a couple have rolled back.

It's all down to personal choice, plus it also depends what you want to do with it.

So - that's one for and one agin.

Which leads me to thinking a middle course of just 8.1 might be the best considered option - if there's little difference between the two and particularly for this non-prof numpty who does not put much demand on his computer.

I also like the idea of giving it a few months till they iron out W10 so it's "flat" and consistent.

I'll cogitate on 8.1 - - everything on my laptop is "tickety-boo" at the mo and although it's boring - it's working - and my experience of updating is I have to reload lots of stuff to get back to where I want to be.

I will come back when this momentous decision has been made to let you know how it went.

As far as I am aware the upgrade from 8 to 8.1 shouldn't alter anything settings wise and no installed programs need to be reinstalled. It is only a little bit more than the old service packs used to be with XP and Vista, or Windows 7. The main thing is some minor changes to the operating system that give you a bit more control.

That sounds like a good plan.

You have plenty of time to take the free upgrade to Win10.... so there's no rush.

Running an 'Insider Preview' means that we get any new updates to try before they are released to the general pubic. ( more like Guinea pigs )

There's a lot of new stuff and bug fixes coming.... but it will take time before the pubic see this.

Plus 8.1 is a big improvement on 8.

Updated to 8.1 about three weeks ago and so far it's all been fine.

As NEV said nothing changed on the laptop all the apps and progs left as is only change is colour to some tiles - but Hey Ho.

Laptop did slow and cursor went raggy but following day I got an update offer from Samsung Update - - did the deed and and speed went up and cursor back to normal.

So can't report anything exciting went wrong - perhaps sometimes boring is good ?
