I have had this computer since 2012, so I was hoping to get a few more years out of it before changing computer. Basically, if the comp is knocked or lifted suddenly, it either blue screens, or switches off entirely. When it comes back on, I get a screen that says it's checking the disc, and undergoes a check for "bad" or "orphan" files, amongst other things that are a bit beyond my level of PC literacy. Previously, the laptop had been quite slow, for example, the keyboard would be slow to respond to my typing, which would result in sentences being very garbled. The battery also doesn't last as it used to.

I think the inside is probably very dusty (I was living in a very old house for a bit.) For a bit, I also heard a scraping sound coming from the inside, which I think may have been the fan.

If you have any advice, please let me know. I'm a PhD student, so I really need my computer to survive this.

Many thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to ExTS

I assume that the OS is Win 7 ( from your profile ) Could you confirm this please?

Also - let us know the make and model number of the laptop ( this may help later )

It is a possibility that dust has built up inside the case.

The usual first step is to get a can of compressed air ( any computer shop even motor factors ) and, using short blasts, spray through the vents.

This is best done outside.

Just picking up your machine and it blue screens suggests a bad connection.

Try taking the battery out and running on just the power-adapter.

Also try just the battery without the mains adapter connected.

If the RAM is accessible ( usually under a panel in the base ) take this out and replace.

You could also try these one at a time.

If you hold the keyboard firmly on a table and move the screen backwards and forwards - does it blue screen doing this ?

Let us know the results of the above.

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!
