cockpheasant Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 My old comp running Win 7 died (graphics). I have the hard drive (sata ide) with Win 7 on it, I also have a 7 disc. Stupidly, I binned the old case with the windows no key sticker. Is there any way that I can get the no from the old hard drive and will; microsoft stand me transferring it to a laptop presently running Vista. Compliments of the season to all Quote
Plastic Nev Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 If you can connect the drive to the laptop externally via a USB port, (You can obtain SATA adapters or a caddy) you can at least rescue the data. There are also a few small programs, one is called "Magical Jellybean, which might be able to find the Windows 7 product key, though not sure if it can work on an externally connected drive. RandyL Posted December 12, 2015 Posted December 12, 2015 If your Windows 7 disk is a full installation disk the key will be on the disk or disk case. If that were the case then you could transfer the license to a different computer. However since you said the key was on the computer itself this would suggest that the disk is a oem disk or recovery disk which will not allow an installation to any other computer unless it was the same make and model series. Just swapping out the drives will not work either. Your best option is as Nev says. Connect the old drive for data recovery. Quote We are all members helping other members.
